LESS THAN JAKE, STORY OF THE YEAR, NEVER SHOUT NEVER, HEY MONDAY, CALL THE COPS, EVERY AVENUE,
THE READY SET, THE SUMMER SET AND MORE
FESTIVAL WILL ALSO INCLUDE RICARDO LAGUNA’S PRO BMX DIRT JUMP COMPETITION, PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING BY ADRENALINE UNLEASHED, AND ROLLER DERBY;

February 24, 2010—The 15th annual Extreme Thing Sports & Music Festival will be back in Las Vegas this year. Held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Desert Breeze Skate Park, this year’s event will again offer fans a full day of rock and extreme sports, including a Pro BMX dirt jump competition, professional wrestling, roller derby, as well as the Vegas AmJam amateur BMX and skate competition.

For the first time ever, the festival will feature three live music stages, including the Verizon Wireless main stage, the newly formed AP (Alternative Press) Stage featuring the Alternative Press Tour, and the XPOZ Local Band Stage consisting of local area acts. Bands performing at Extreme Thing 2010 include The Used, Five Finger Death Punch, Escape The Fate, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Story of the Year, Never Shout Never, Call The Cops, Hey Monday, Every Avenue, The Summer Set and The Ready Set. More artists will be announced shortly.

Concertgoers should note, only a personal “unopened” bottle of water can be brought into the festival along with still cameras and sunscreen. There will be multiple ATM’s on site, plus an array of food for purchase, from barbecue to Thai, along with beverages. Please note: no alcohol will be sold. No animals, coolers, weapons or chairs will be permitted.

‘This Addiction’-CD

Si dice che per fare un buon album, ci vogliano buone doti in fase di composizione ironia e talento,
e questo se non altro era il parere del mai troppo citato Jhonn Cummings aka Ramones brother n. 1!
Ora qui parlando di chitarristi ancora in vita e parlando degli Alkaline Trio, il bridge giusto scivola
su Matt Skiba leadear formale e spirituale, voce e sei corde appunto della band. Focalizzo la vostra attenzione e mi spiego: Skiba sta agli Alkaline, come la schiuma sta ad una pinta di birra. Interessante esemplare di mammifero, si esibisce dentro e fuori dal palcoscenico, scaltro a pavoneggiarsi ma senza esagerare, frequenta di rado la sala prove, preferisce comporre in chat o lasciando messaggi sonori nella segreteria telefonica degli altri due Alcalini, roba che neanche Costello e Burt Bacarach. Se ci mettete pure un certo gusto “sano” per l’occulto, abbiamo una bella band che intriga, suona e non scontenta quasi nessuno, ‘This Addiction’ è il parto di tutto questo, ottimo rock che oscilla su un’onda punkeggiante – proto dark – e pop d’annata, con pezzi che fanno il verso ai migliori
Misfits come ‘Dine Dine My Darling’ e ‘Draculina’ e omaggiano Cure e Smiths: ‘Dead On The Floor’!! Durante gli anni Skiba ha limato la sua creatura come Rodin limava le sue pietre, dandone una forma non necessariamente migliore di come lo era inizialmente ma facendola pulsare, ri-portandola alla vita; questo e molti altri trip tra cui abiti gessati a tre bottoni, make up da geisha e film horror di dubbio gusto spiegano il perchè una band partita a braccetto coi Pennywise è finita poi a leggere poesie di Baudelaire nella bat-caverna! La cosa sconvolgente (ed è qui che mi levo tanto di tuba ) è che gli Alkaline non ci tengono a passar per intellettuali, piuttosto per burloni, standosene lì a suonare pettini rotolando per una scogliera chiusi dentro un armadio, e direi che noi ci stiamo abbastanza dentro.

SPARKS THE RESCUE
‘Eyes To The Sun’-CD
(Hassle/Rude)
Un gruppo come gli Sparks The Rescue è sostanzialmente inutile. Però non sta scritto da nessuna parte che il concetto di inutilità escluda necessariamente quello di gradevolezza o quello di divertimento. Nel caso in questione, si tratta di tipico So-Cal Punk, energico ed orecchiabile, scritto con sufficiente abilità e ponderatezza. Nulla di nuovo sotto il sole (che non è il sole della California, come ci si aspetterebbe; la band infatti arriva da Portland, Maine), ma ‘Eyes To The Sun’ riesce comunque ad intrattenere con una certa affabilità: è sufficiente alzare il volume a palla e mettersi nello stato d’animo giusto. Che è poi quello del party sulla spiaggia, con tanto di falò, birretta ghiacciata e biondina caruccia con cui limonare. Blink 182, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, Alkaline Trio: i riferimenti sono espliciti, i cori ultramelodici, la produzione impeccabile, gli arrangiamenti efficaci, l’originalità inesistente. Tutto qua. Il minimo sindacale è raggiunto con comoda disinvoltura ma, come era solito ripetere il mio prof di matematica del liceo, i ragazzi si dovrebbero applicare un po’ di più se non vogliono impantanarsi tutta la vita in questa robetta per teenager.

‘Chair Evolution (Not Design)’-CD

La Ufo Hi-Fi Records, piccola casa discografica capitolina che già ci aveva deliziato nel recente passato con gioiellini del calibro di My Awesome Mixtape o Black Circus Tarantula, concede oggi una (giusta) chance pure ai White Pagoda, band aretina che si era fatta notare grazie all’autoprodotto ‘Sofa’. Il nuovo ‘Chair Evolution (Not Design)’, debutto ufficiale con tutti i crismi del caso, si presenta come un disco punk old-style inzuppato di accenti retrò, in girandole garage, rassicurazioni sixties, persino beat o surf, e sfrontatezze indie-rock’n’roll. Ne vien fuori una sequenza di quindici pezzi vintage, insolenti e concisi (sempre nei due minuti di durata), molto coinvolgenti nella loro urgenza, adeguando a tali canoni pure la bella ‘Blister In The Sun’, classico dei Violent Femmes. L’album così macina giri in un turbine di sonorità melodiche ma abrasive, tra essenzialità e immediatezza. Il gruppo toscano guarda prevalentemente al passato, rivisitando la tradizione punk ante litteram nel modo migliore, rispettoso dei padri fondatori, e alla fine ci si rende conto che quest’uscita rappresenta quanto di meglio si possa chiedere in fatto di garage-punk, oggi come oggi.

In June 2008 a guy by the name of Mitchell Davis (www.youtube.com/livelavalive)
created and posted a parody video about the Usher cologne fragrance and living the day in the life of the rapper on You Tube. In his video he wondered if a band like MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE had their own fragrance, and what his day would be like. After finding out about the video, the band reached out to Mitchell and an instant friendship was formed. They both agreed that it would be amazing to do a full video for ‘On Wings Of Integrity’ and take his original concept and continue the story. MYCHILDREN MYBRIDE’S video ‘On Wings Of Integrity’ features Mitchell living a day in the life of the band and the MCMB fragrance. ‘Sweet Party’-CD

Dietro al mixer siede Shaun Lopez, produttore di Deftones e Will Haven, e la cosa dovrebbe essere abbastanza indicativa. In poco meno di mezz’ora, infatti, i vicentini Devotion scorticano il nu-metal, lasciando scoperti i nervi tesi delle emozioni e dello struggimento come solo la band di Chino Moreno sa(peva) fare. In questo senso ‘Sweet Party’ fornisce una prova notevole, senza scoprire nuovi percorsi (gli Snapcase, tanto per dirne una, operano in questa direzione già da un po’), ma sfoggiando una maestria notevole nel maneggiare molti degli stilemi tipici di quel suono: un rifferama complesso che non si limita al puro impatto, stratificazioni sonore progressive, vocals strazianti che alternano clean e scream, un’attenzione particolare alle dinamiche chitarra/sezione ritmica. L’unica pecca, probabilmente, è l’eccessiva monotematicità dei componimenti, che generano un muro di dolore continuo, pesante e reiterato, nel quale si intravede solo una breccia, ‘Bubbles’, trip-hop strumentale sintetico ed inquietante. Ma è un’annotazione di poco conto, in virtù del fatto che si tratta di un esordio e che dalla (ulteriore) maturazione dei Devotion possiamo aspettarci grandi cose.

Parlare di hardcore newyorkese old-school, in questo caso, appare superfluo. Il monicker è fin troppo esplicito e la copertina non fa altro che sottolineare l’ovvio. Sono chiari la provenienza, gli orientamenti musicali, l’attitudine. L’attacco è violento, reiterato, dalle cadenze metropolitane; la produzione è scarna, essenziale, retrò. Un vero e proprio ritorno alle radici del suono hc, quindi. ‘Empire State’ è talmente rigido ed ortodosso che l’unico accostamento pensabile è quello con i primi dischi di Biohazard, Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front. Non c’è traccia alcuna di modernità o di accondiscendenza nei confronti del mercato mainstream, e le comparsate di Eddie Sutton (cantante dei Leeway) in ‘Talkin Smack’ e di Tony Enz (cantante dei Reason Enough) in ‘One Good Thing’ devono essere interpretate come ulteriori sigilli di coerenza e, soprattutto, come segnali della fratellanza che regna all’interno della scena. Complimenti alla Countdown Records di Vicenza, quindi, per essere riuscita a mettere sotto contratto gli Olde York, band ideale per i nostalgici del suono storico hc, ma anche per le nuove generazioni che si avvicinano solo ora a questo genere.

Gli Shai Hulud nascono nel 1995 in Florida, e da quasi 15 anni vivono a NYC a base di violentissimo metalcore. Nonostante il boom che ha subito questo genere negli ultimi anni gli Shai Hulud sono sempre rimasti defilati, di nicchia, quasi una band per puristi: niente esibizionismo gratuito ma solo tanta passione e devozione per la loro musica.
La band debutta con un sette pollici e un concerto al Cheers di Miami,in brevissimo tempo la loro fama raggiunge i quattro angoli degli States: gli Shai Hulud saranno la next big thing dell’hardcore più aggressivo e devastante! Infatti, quando la scena metalcore scoppia nel panorama alternativo mondiale, tra le band che svettano tra le influenze di tutti sono quattro: insieme a Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan e Poison The Well non potevano mancare che gli Shai Hulud.
Oltre ai fans e al rispetto delle altre band gli Shai Hulud convincono tanti media specializzati, tra cui Alternative Press che ne loda soprattutto le liriche, intelligenti, mai banali, dotate di un’etica sincera e positiva.
Nei primi anni del 2000 tutti i componenti della band si dedicano a progetti paralleli ma senza mai sciogliere ufficialmente gli Shai Hulud: bisognerà attendere fino al 2008 per rivederli all’opera… un ritorno col botto perché ‘Misanthropy Pure’ (Metal Blade Rec) è indubbiamente uno dei lavori migliori dell’anno: un album pesante, che alterna velocità graffianti a melodie destrutturate, un lavoro imponente, in cui gli Shai Hulud si accaniscono ferocemente anche su accenni rock, progressive e tratti inconfondibilmente metal.
Purtroppo negli anni la band subisce anche svariati cambi di formazione – un cantante viene addirittura reclutato durante la tappa olandese di un tour europeo – cosa che probabilmente ha bloccato il successo più mainstream della band, che ciononostante è sempre in grado di scatenare una furia esplosiva su qualsiasi palco, dagli squat ai maggiori festival mondiali, gli Shai Hulud sono sinonimo di una piacevolissima distruzione sonora.

“This is our best album yet”. Lo dicono forse tutte le band prima di uscire con un disco, suona chiaramente scontato. Ma questa è assolutamente la prima volta in 9 anni di carriera che lo sentiamo dire a Danko Jones, e suona decisamente diverso se sentito dalla bocca del rocker canadese.

Si, perché la band ha dichiarato a sorpresa di avere un nuovo album pronto, ‘BELOW THE BELT’, in uscita mondiale a metà maggio (saremo più precisi quando avremo una data definitiva). ‘Below The Belt’ è stato prodotto da Matt De Matteo, collaboratore di lunga data della band ( ha prodotto ‘We Sweat Blood’ e ‘Sleep Is The Enemy’). Una scelta che manifesta la volontà della band di tornare ai suoi suoni più duri e potenti, cercando di coniugarli con l’attenzione alle armonie che caratterizza le sue uscite piu recenti. La cover dell’album è già visibile su www.dankojones.com (vi consigliamo vivamente di perdere un secondo ed andare a vederla…è probabilmente la più chiara espressione della “poetica” di Danko Jones vista fino ad ora).
Come ci ricorda il “tweet” che introduce questo comunicato, la band è appena tornata a casa dopo una estensiva tourneè nord americana con i GUNS ‘N’ ROSES: l’anno non poteva iniziare meglio dal punto di vista live, e continuerà allo stesso livello. Dopo un nuovo passaggio negli states da headliner la band tornerà questa estate nei festival europei dopo la più lunga assenza dal continente in 9 anni di carriera (dovuta appunto agli impegni negli States ed in Canada).
