Non importa dove, non importa come, non importa quando e nemmeno com’eran vestiti, se pioveva o c’era il sole, se era notte oppure giorno…l’importante è aver incontrato Faris Badwan “Rotter”, leader indiscusso e voce dei britannici Horrors. Chi sono? Wikipedia recita così: The Horrors sono un gruppo musicale proveniente da Southend-On-Sea, nell’Essex inglese.

SD: Allora ragazzi, potreste raccontare ai nostri lettori qualcosa in più degli Horrors, cose che dovremmo sapere ma che ancora non sappiamo?

H: Joseph si diletta in vari sport estremi, dallo snowboard all’alpinismo, e quant’ altro del genere.
Io gioco a calcio…molto…. come centrocampista destro…oltre ad essere un irriducibile tifoso del Blackburn, una squadra della Premier League.

SD: Sicchè hai avuto di che discutere con Chuck dei Crocodiles durante il tour?

H: Già lui è un fan accanito del Manchester…ha pure un tatuaggio dedicato sul braccio destro.

SD: Come sono cambiate le cose da quando avete iniziato a suonare?

H: Ehm…direi che abbiamo meno soldi, più canzoni e siamo stati in più paesi.
Siamo stati in Australia e in Giappone…fantastico. Ci ritorneremo in Febbraio, e a Marzo per la prima volta, andremo anche in Argentina e Brasile con i Franz Ferdinand, sarà un grande tour…
Effettivamente, siamo stati in tutto il mondo…Questa è una delle cose migliori dell’essere parte di una band, ovviamente al di la della musica stessa, vedere paesi nei quali non si è mai stati prima.

SD: Quale è stato il complimento più bello che avete ricevuto sul nuovo disco e quale è stata la cosa più bizzarra che è stata detta?

H: Alcuni dicono che alcune canzoni suonano come “live”, il che è certamente un gran complimento, ma allo stesso tempo è bizzarro…perché quando fai musica attiri un certo tipo di gente…e noi abbiamo sempre attirato dei fan piuttosto stravaganti.

SD: Come descriveresti la vostra musica e quali sono le vostre influenze principali? Garage punk?

H: Io credo che ogni persona dovrebbe avere una sua personale reazione alla musica, quindi non ci piace dire agli altri cosa dovrebbero pensare della musica, non importa che genere fai.

SD: Che effetti ha il tour sulla vita di ogni giorno, sulle vostre relazioni, sulla famiglia? Ora che tour state facendo e come stanno andando le cose?

H: La maggior parte di noi ha fidanzate storiche, quindi credo che si è trascorso assieme abbastanza tempo per essere abituati a questa vita. Sai…fai un tour e poi un altro, poi stai a casa a lungo, poi ti stanchi di stare a casa, e non vedi l’ora di ripartire e fare un altro tour…non so è come un cerchio…

SD: Si, tipo un serpente che si morde la coda…

H: Esattamente…A me personalmente piace molto essere in tour. Può essere stressante perché vorresti sempre fare dei buoni shows, e ovviamente quando suoni male inizi a chiederti ma che ci faccio, vorresti smettere…però credo sia fantastico essere in tutti questi posti nei quali altrimenti non saresti…molte delle città nelle quali sono stato, non le avrei viste altrimenti e non ci tornerò per chissà quanto tempo, forse mai più…impari molte cose, conosci molte persone…

SD: Puoi raccontarci qualche storia interessante avvenuta durante l’ultimo tour con i Crocodiles?

H: In realtà, ce ne sono state molte, e’ stato veramente divertente. Ero a casa di certa gente, e mi sono svegliato con un serpente intorno al mio collo…buffo, incredibile, però è successo davvero!

In quanti di voi hanno pensato almeno una volta nella vita: “cazzo magari lavorare in un’etichetta come la Revelation Records“. Ecco che i ragazzi della label californiana nel loro blog hanno postato un teaser su come la vita di ogni giorno scorre per chi ci lavora dentro tra: scaffali, computer, ordini, packaging, spedizioni, stampe di magliette, etc.

In fondo vedrete che tuttosommato non è tanto differente da una qualsiasi altra azienda italiana se non per il fatto che il materiale trattato è quello per cui spendiamo una vagonata di soldi; beh lì i soldi magari li guadagni anche, almeno quelli della tua paghetta oraria, ma sei nel tempio della “buona musica” e quindi forse mandare un curriculum non è poi così umiliante e irresponsabile. Buona fortuna e in bocca al lupo a chi deciderà di tentare la sorte…

‘Take Action Volume 9’-CD

Il nono volume della compilation ‘Take Action’ si prefigge di perorare la causa dell’organizzazione no-profit “Do Something and Driving for Donors”, nata dall’attività del giovane Pat Padraja, al quale è stata diagnosticata qualche anno fa una grave forma di leucemia, e che gira gli Stati Uniti alla continua ricerca di donatori di midollo osseo; attività che gli è valso il premio “Viewers Choice CNN Heroes” ed il riconoscimento “Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Boy of the Year” per il 2008. Una percentuale della vendita di questa raccolta (e del tour che ne seguirà, con We The Kings, Mayday Parade, A Rocket To The Moon e There For Tomorrow) verrà devoluto dalla Hopeless Records (attraverso la propria organizzazione benefica Sub City) affinché l’azione di Pat Padraja venga svolta per molto tempo ancora. Parlare di musica diventa pressoché superfluo, a questo punto. Sappiate che la compilation comprende due cd pieni zeppi di canzoni (perlopiù inedite, o versioni alternative), ed i generi presentati sono quanto di più eterogeneo si possa immaginare. Si parte con la cover acustica di ‘The Middle’ dei Jimmy Eat World da parte dei floridiani We The King, e si arriva al metalcore degli August Burns Red, passando per la follia crossover degli I Set My Friends On Fire e per una piacevole versione remix di un pezzo dei Bring Me The Horizon. Certo, gran parte del materiale in scaletta è commerciale ai limiti dell’umana sopportazione, e difficilmente interesserà coloro i quali sono abituati a sonorità ben più hard. Ma per un fine così nobile si può di certo sopportare anche il più insulso dei motivetti pop.

TONY SLY
‘12 Song Program’-CD
(Fat Wreck)
Un primo assaggio ce lo siamo già gustato qualche anno fa, all’uscita dello split acustico con Joey Cape (‘Acoustic’, appunto, del 2004). Nessuna meraviglia, quindi, per questo ’12 Song Program’, disco solista senza spina del cantante dei No Use For A Name e collezione di canzoni in cui tutta l’attenzione viene concentrata sulle chitarre e sulle voci. Voci, al plurale, perché non c’è solo quella di Tony Sly a dominare il proscenio, ma anche il contraltare femminile rappresentato dalla brava Karina Denike (The Dance Hall Crashers), che gli tiene testa in molti brani. Il tono cantautorale incombe inesorabilmente su tutto l’album, ma l’impressione prevalente è che si abbia a che fare con un power-pop arrangiato con metodi differenti (a partire dalla strumentazione legni & corde). Non parlerei neanche di folk, a questo punto, ma semplicemente di una modalità alternativa di esposizione: i contenuti (cioè i dodici pezzi del disco) si muovono esattamente nello stesso mondo che già conoscevamo in versione elettrica, con una naturale predilezione per le ballate e le ninnananne. Ciò non toglie che il disco sia un piccolo gioiellino intimo ed intenso, ora fragile ora allegro, e si riesca a gustare anche senza essere fan dei NUFAN.

‘Bankrupt’-CD

Per il garage/rock’n’roll l’autoproduzione è una soluzione tutt’altro che disprezzabile, considerate le tipicità sonore del genere. Se poi si aggiunge la possibilità di usufruire gratuitamente del prodotto musicale, la proposta diventa a dir poco allettante e degna di menzione. I milanesi The Looters escono con il loro primo disco in totale autonomia, mettendolo a disposizione sul web (www.thelooters.it, ma anche su iTunes Store o Amazon) e puntando esclusivamente sulla propria capacità di coinvolgere l’ascoltatore. Zero immagine (forte la copertina in cartone da imballaggio!), solo r’n’r. Quello che colpisce è la loro attitudine “sesso, sudore e benzina”: più o meno i poster con le bionde tettone dei camionisti messi in musica. Naturalmente non è tutto divertimento e goliardia: ‘Al Quaeda’s Age’ ne è l’esempio, con un testo duro ed esplicito. Musicalmente, invece, le coordinate non si discostano troppo da un garage/punk irruente ed essenziale, privo di sovrastrutture e di timori reverenziali. Ma da quattro loschi figuri che si fanno chiamare Teddy Dynamite (voce & chitarra), Howlin Django (chitarra), Bomber Baker (basso) e Mr Hippy (batteria) non ci si poteva attendere altro. Ora, le parole stanno a zero: scaricate il disco, ascoltatelo e diffondetelo.

‘Favourite Sons’-CD

La febbre rock’n’roll si sparge per l’Italia e raggiunge Vicenza con la band a nome Speedjackers, sestetto già titolare di un paio di e.p. usciti negli anni passati (‘Feeling You’, ‘Secularization’). Le loro facce da bravi ragazzi non devono ingannare: ‘Favourite Sons’ è un concentrato di energia che allarga amorevolmente le braccia per accogliere il punk così come il southern. Gli arrangiamenti sono classici, proprio per questo epidermici, ma anche curati nei minimi dettagli (tipo nella splendida ‘No Heroes’). Il gruppo si mette in luce soprattutto per le chitarre affilate, anche quando lo schema si avvicina a quello della ballata (la notevole ‘Wild Side’), e per gli irresistibili attacchi di matrice quasi scandinava tipo Hives/Hellacopters (‘I’m Not A Superman’). L’utilizzo dell’italiano non sembra adattarsi bene alla loro miscela sonora (‘Recidivo’ è una sfuriata sostanzialmente monolitica, ‘Non Saremo Qua’ non riesce a convincere come le altre) e il rude piglio garage-rock dei vicentini si presta molto di più alla formula internazionale di derivazione americana nonché sudista (‘A Little Boom’), per un disco che scorre gradevole ed intrigante, con un numero elevato di canzoni riuscite.

Non lasciamoci influenzare dai vistosi tagli di capelli e dagli occhi pesantemente truccati, per I Am Ghost e compagni l’immagine è solo uno degli elementi del goth rock, ma sicuramente non quello fondamentale: le loro produzioni musicali sono curate in ogni singolo aspetto e i live sono una bomba, energica e devastante. In soli cinque anni di attività gli I Am Ghost hanno conquistato un contratto con la Epitaph, hanno affascinato migliaia di persone in innumerevoli concerti in tutto il mondo e hanno conquistato un posto nell’Olimpo dello screamo e del metal pop. La storia degli I Am Ghost inizia nel 2004 come un progetto innovativo, quasi sperimentale: sarebbe stato troppo facile darsi all’hardcore o al metal, loro vogliono di più, vogliono fondere la scenicità del gotico allo screamo e al metal melodico. Un progetto ambizioso ma che in brevissimo tempo da i suoi frutti: dopo neanche un anno di attività la band firma per la Epitaph con cui escono con l’album di debutto ‘Lovers’ Requiem’. Il secondo lavoro arriva nel 2008, ‘Those We Leave Behind’, un album che dimostra perfettamente la crescita personale e compositiva della band e non fa che accrescere l’enorme fan base che il gruppo ha in tutto il mondo. Le produzioni in studio sono importanti, sono il biglietto da visita di ogni band, ma è sul palco che gli I Am Ghost danno il meglio di loro: una presenza scenica da far invidia a Marylin Manson ma soprattutto grande compattezza tra i componenti della band e molta, molta tecnica. Il risultato sono concerti incredibili, coinvolgenti, in cui lo screamo screamo e melodia sono inscindibili e ogni dettagli attentamente studiato, un concerto perfetto per chi ama suoni forti ma che vuole anche spettacolo e divertimento. Insieme agli I Am Ghost vedremo sul palco gli Eyes Set To Kill, giovane band capitanata da due sorelle che ha già convinto Kerrang e Alternative Press, i Lower Than Atlantis che hanno già un fan base underground enorme grazie al loro sound che mischia sapientemente metal e hardcore, e i Confide, giovani americani che vantano già un contratto con la Tragic Hero e sono ansiosi di dimostrare tutta la loro potenza e il loro carattere! Non solo un concerto, quasi un festival itinerante quello che passerà dal Tunnel domenica 2 maggio, un evento imperdibile!

The story of success began in 1997. It is spring time and in the small town Vänersborg live four young men, with an urge to hassle.
At first we just did things to provoke. We didn’t want to make music that people listen to, instead we wanted to create art and lyrics that made people mad, says Per Stålberg, the guitarist and singer of the swedish punk rock band Division of Laura Lee, DOLL.

At the time he’s a 23 year old with an aim to upset as many as possible and according to himself was a handful. Together with Jonas Gustafsson, an polite young man in his early twenties who loved experimenting with music, Håkan Johansson, who were the organized and goal oriented one in the group – and still are, and Henrik Röstberg who quit DOLL in 1999.
We wanted different things, but Henrik is still a very close friend, says Per. Instead David Fransson began playing with the band in 2000, and since then they´ve been together.

I´ve played in almost 50 different bands, but never found a constellation with the same dynamics as Division of Laura Lee has, says Per. Division of Laura Lee´s first gig was at a friend´s birthday party.  And after just two weeks they recorded their first demo. Their sound is a mixture of Jonas wanting to play the “San Diego style”,  find that underground sound and a constant unwillingness to rehearse together.

When we record we see each other for six days in a row and then five months can pass without we get together. It´s hard to find that spark again when you´ve been together for that long.

But it was first after the big breakthrough they found that special sound they´ve got today.

We´ve never compromised!

The name has it`s origins from a combination of the well known soul artist Laura Lee and a cookie box witch said “Division of Sara Lee”. It really doesn´t have a meaning. It´s just a name, you know.

Not only have they released five full length album, DOLL also just finished the exhibition – ”We’ve Been Planning This For Years, And Of Course You Had To Fuck It Up.” A collection of both new and old paintings, photographs, graphics and videos witch they describes as “what Division of Laura Lee should have been from the beginning: a bloody mess.”

Division of Laura Lee is a band who does what ever they like. That’s why the still can make music together after thirteen years. You can compare us to new up and coming bands with 18 year olds and still find that we kick ass, and always have done!

This spring DOLL will release a new record, and a new USA tour is coming up. We´ll play as long as we want to and as long as it´s fun. You don´t get rich in the meaning of money doing this, but you get rich in the sense of experiences. We want to become Vänersborg´s answer to Sonic Youth.

Due to the current situation there is nothing else we can do as of now. Both bands will be on separate tours in the fall, we will try to make up for those cancellations. Best Regards”

Lo stunt australiano Robbie Maddison non ha solo saltato sul Canale di Corinto, della larghezza di 85 m e un’altezza di quasi 100 m, ma è riuscito a far fronte a un dettaglio di non poca importanza: la paura.

Corinto (Grecia). Con trick di grosso spessore, con salti che arrivano ad altezze pari a una palazzina, il motocross freestyle è tra gli sport freestyle più pericolosi al mondo. E Robbie Maddison è uno dei suoi migliori rappresentanti. Tutto questo non è però abbastanza per il 28enne australiano sempre alla ricerca di una nuova e più intensa scossa adrenalinica con l’intento di emulare Evel Knievel, famoso stuntman deceduto nel 2007. Nel corso del 2007 e del 2008 il freestyler ha migliorato per ben tre volte il record mondiale di salto in lungo portandolo infine ai notevoli 107 metri (350 piedi).

Nel 2009 ha salutato il nuovo anno lanciandosi sulla riproduzione dell’Arco di Trionfo a Las Vegas da un’altezza di 30 metri per poi ritornare a terra. Sempre l’anno scorso poi le immagini del suo salto del Tower Bridge sul Tamigi hanno fatto il giro del mondo.

Già diversi motocrossisti in passato hanno accarezzato il sogno di saltare da un capo all’altro del Canale di Corinto costruito nel 1893, ma solo lo stunt australiano è riuscito a realizzare quest’impresa. Da una partenza affatto lineare con vista su piscina, attraverso un campo da calcio, passando a fianco di alcuni pollai giovedì mattina ha pigiato sull’acceleratore della sua Honda 500 raggiungendo i 125 km/h. Da una rampa si è poi catapultato sul Canale che scorreva a 80 metri di profondità per poi atterrare sicuro, dopo 85 metri di volo, sulla collina dell’altra sponda. Il salto ha avuto il suo culmine massimo ad un’altezza di oltre 95 metri!

La sfida più grande è stata solo in secondo luogo la difficile partenza caratterizzata da un continuo cambiamento di fondo – dal prato al cemento, dal legno all’asfalto fino al tappeto di lancio – ha dichiarato Maddison. “Superare la paura, questa è la cosa più difficile in assoluto!”

Dalla Grecia “Maddo” si trasferirà direttamente a Città del Messico per continuare con impegno la sua sfida, la partenza del Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, che vuole quest’anno intende assolutamente vincere dopo il secondo posto messo a punto nell’ultima edizione.

GUILTY PARTY BOAT CRUISE A VENEZIA. 14, 15, 16 MAGGIO 2010

Guilty Party Boat Cruise è un festival di musica Rock and Roll che si terrà il 14,15 e 16 maggio 2010 su una barcone nella laguna di Venezia. Ogni sera dalle 8:00 alle 2:30 del mattino la barca salperà per le acque veneziane con band dal vivo e dj internazionali per un’esperienza musicale unica di festa e concerti a bordo di una barca. Tra gli ospiti musicali gli americani Oh Sees (dal vivo per la prima volta in europa) band della nuova scena garage rock, che da poco ha firmato per Sub Pop, etichetta discografica indipendente tra le più note al mondo. I russi Messer Chups, pionieri di una surf music sperimentale, con un incredibile spettacolo visual tra b-movies e horror, e i Fevers, leggendaria band di power pop americano. Tra i molti dj internazionali ospiti dell’evento, ognuno con selezioni esclusive di musica garage, rock and roll, punk rock, degno di nota è Tim Warren, fondatore della storica etichetta americana Crypt Records famosa per la compilation in 8 volumi Back From The Grave, e di svariate altre compilation di musica surf, rockabilly, punk rock, exotica, garage punk, rhythm and blues e soul music. Nei giorni dell’evento, oltre alla crociera in barca saranno organizzati altri happening nella città di Venezia, come aperitivi con dj set ed evetni collaterali ai giri in barca. I posti sono limitati a 200 al giorno; è necessario quindi prenotare tramite il sito dell’evento (www.guiltyboat.org) e da alcuni rivenditori autorizzati nell’area del Veneto. L’intero artwork dell’evento è curato dall’illustratore berlinese Till Christ (www.tillchrist.de) che ha ideato il logo dell’evento, il poster e i flyer.

Sabato 24 Aprile PREMIERE VIDEO BLUEPRINT ‘Make Friends With The Color Blue’

Il 4 Aprile si è tenuta, presso il cinema Prince Charles di Londra, la première di MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE COLOUR BLUE. A giudicare dai commenti entusiasti il nuovo full lenght di Blueprint Skateboards, a 5 anni dall’uscita di ‘Lost And Found’, pare proprio essere una bomba.
All’indomani della Premiere UK i nostri sono partiti per un tour che li ha portati in varie location Inglesi tour che presto porterà i nostri eroi anche dalle nostre parti. Nel weekend del 24/25 aprile, in contemporanea con la premiere USA, si terrà anche lo screening italiano del video. La premiere italiana di MFWB accadrà Sabato 24 Aprile presso il Trinity Skatepark di Milano. A partire dalle ore 17:00, con session di skateboard in compagnia dei Blueprint riders. A seguire aperitivo e, alle ore 21:30, proiezione del video Blueprint MFWTCB. Per chiudere la serata con live show e DJ set.

ATTENZIONE: Da oggi e per tutta l’Estate il Trinity apre con i seguenti orari: Lunedì Chiuso – da Martedì a Venerdì 17:00 – 1:00 – Sabato e Domenica 10:00 – 1:00. Le BMX possono girare tutti i giorni fino all’apertura del Bike Park (data da destinarsi)

3 INCHES OF BLOOD Prepare For North American Touring Onslaught, Shoot New Video For ‘Silent Killer’ and Announce Mayhem Tour Album Reissue

The biggest defenders of traditional heavy metal, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, are currently preparing for the next big North American touring onslaught, which kicks off with a massive run across Canada on April 28th with Goatwhore. This leads them directly into the much anticipated, big summer festival Rockstar Mayhem Tour performing alongside such major acts as Lamb of God, Rob Zombie and Hatebreed. The group’s latest album, ‘Here Waits Thy Doom’, is going to be reissued as a Mayhem Tour edition with four exclusive new tracks along with a bonus DVD featuring their video for ‘Battles And Brotherhood’, their performance on Fuel TV and more. Look for this new edition everywhere on June 29th.

Shane Clark (guitars) further comments: “Hey all. It’s that exciting time again when we’re making another video. Fuck Yeah! This time around it’s for our song ‘Silent Killer.’ It’s going to be a straight up East Van production once again directed by our friend Rick Podd who directed our barbaric ‘Battles And Brotherhood’ video. This time, it’s going to be about us getting killed by an assassin methodically throughout one fine Vancouver evening. I personally am excited because we have one of the industry’s finest FX artists around helping us add a nice element of gore and guts which will get your blood boiling.
