Vans presenta Kustom & Art Show

KUSTOM & ART SHOW -Vans colora l’Isola con Block Party & Lowbrow Art-

Vans supporterà la seconda edizione del Kustom & Art Show appuntamento presentato dal Distretto Commerciale Isola in collaborazione con l’Associazione culturale Custom Sickles, Officine Mermaid e Low Ride Magazine, che si svolgerà dal 17 al 19 Settembre, nel quartiere Isola, a Milano. In una cornice davvero singolare composta da una miniramp da skate, roboanti Harley Davidson e automobili customizzate, si alterneranno artisti nazionali e internazionali. Una tre giorni dove l’espressione personale si manifesterà come arte, musica, skateboard, bmx, video premiere e party, che trasformeranno il quartiere Isola nel cuore pulsante di Milano.
Venerdì 17 Settembre, l’inaugurazione dell’evento verrà suggellata con la video premier del film documentario ‘Onde Nostre’, realizzato da Luca Merli e Matteo Ferrari, sulla cultura surf diffusa in Italia. Sabato 18 Settembre, durante il Block Party che vedrà coinvolta tutta la Via Thaon De Revel con le più svariate attività legate alla “Cultura di Strada”, Vans proporrà al pubblico, dalle ore 18:00, una demo di skate e bmx con atleti professionisti. Domenica 19 Settembre la tre giorni si concluderà con un evento ad ingresso libero, nel locale “La Fonderia”, dove artisti e ospiti potranno godersi il brunch organizzato per l’occasione. Si potranno trascorrere tre giorni all’insegna della creatività e ammirare le opere d’ispirazione Lowbrow Art, movimento artistico californiano datato fine anni ’70, che deve il suo nome al contrasto polemico con il termine highbrow (cultura elitaria, arte ufficiale), ed è costituito da svariate influenze provenienti dalla grafica dei fumetti underground, dall’estetica del tattoo e dalla Kustom Kulture, fino ad arrivare alle sonorità surf della West Coast. Per la creazione delle loro opere gli artisti lowbrow prediligono, infatti, l’utilizzo di supporti non convenzionali: non solo classici quadri su tela o poster serigrafati, ma anche veicoli come automobili, motociclette, biciclette e skateboard, sculture in movimento e punto d’incontro tra persone didiverse culture. L’evento si svolgerà all’Isola, quartiere di Milano, che sta diventando un punto di riferimento per le avanguardie culturali milanesi, e che si tramuterà per tre giorni nella culla della street culture italiana. Un appuntamento innovativo, da non perdere, che porterà a Milano il tocco eclettico e visionario tipico della cultura artistica californiana.

Il momento è quasi arrivato: tra poco più di una settimana gli Arcade Fire saliranno sul palco dell’ I-Day Festival all’ Arena Parco Nord di Bologna per la loro unica data italiana. Ad un mese dall’uscita del loro nuovo album ‘The Suburbs’, accolto entusiasticamente da critica e pubblico e balzato subito alla posizione numero 1 della classifica Uk e Usa, la band di Montreal presenterà dal vivo i nuovi brani, per un concerto che si preannuncia imperdibile. Ad accompagnarli ci saranno i Modest Mouse, una delle band di maggior successo della scena indie a stelle e strisce, tra rock acido, psichedelia e divagazioni country-folk. Infart 2010 – Hello Nasty!

Dopo il successo delle passate edizioni, che hanno richiamato oltre 50.000 persone ogni anno facendo esplodere Bassano di colori, giunge alla quarta edizione il festival italiano dedicato all’Urban Art, uno dei più importanti appuntamenti con la street art d’Europa. Nel weekend del 3, 4 e 5 settembre, più di 60 artisti internazionali invaderanno l’Arena Cimberle Ferari, l’Ex Garage Nardini e il Castello degli Ezzelini di Bassano del Grappa, trasformando la città a colpi di pennello, bombolette, fotografie, collage, stencil, sculture, installazioni ed energia.
In un’idea di evoluzione continua, Infart presenta anche quest’anno grandi novità. A Bassano arriveranno artisti belgi del calibro di Roa, Bue The Warriors, Resto, Steve Locatelli, che negli ultimi anni hanno svolto un grosso lavoro nelle capitali europee e d’oltreoceano. Insieme a loro ci saranno gli spagnoli Zosen, Kenor, H 101 e Sabojealmontaje con i loro colori sgargianti, e il francese C215, uno dei più produttivi street artist al mondo. Non mancheranno anche gli italiani: artisti provenienti da Milano, Roma, Torino, e, naturalmente, da Bassano. Venerdì 3 settembre, insieme all’inaugurazione della mostra “Indoor Exhibition”, che raccoglie opere su tela e sculture inedite di selezionati artisti e che sarà visitabile fino al 19 settembre, al Castello degli Ezzelini verrà presentato anche “All City Writers” un allestimento video a cura di Andrea Caputo, che ripercorre attraverso immagini d’archivio la scena Writing europea e internazionale, raccontando trent’anni del movimento a partire dalle sue origini del Bronx degli anni ’70, fino all’esplosione del fenomeno in Europa durante l’ultimo ventennio. Sabato 4 sarà la giornata contro la mafia e l’illegalità. Per educare alla legalità, in programma c’è la conferenza Smash Illegality: non un noioso convegno ma un evento non convenzionale fatto di musica a parole. Tra gli ospiti, Luciano Mirone, don Luigi Tellatin e relatori della Cooperativa Locria. Infart 2010 – Hello Nasty! è un caleidoscopio espressivo fatto di arte, strada, ed anche di musica. Sarà infatti accompagnato da un vero e proprio festival di musica elettronica che si terrà sabato 4 e domenica 5 settembre all’Arena Cimberle-Ferrari.  Saranno molti i dj che si daranno il cambio in consolle: il duo italiano Pink Is Punk di ritorno dalla tournée in Giappone, l’internazionale Dj Spiller, Dj Color della Nano Records, il side project di Infart Ackeejuice e ancora Dj Boma, Lrst, Smash The Disco, Stardustfresher, Kenor, Dj Nico e Dj Maick.

RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS
‘Underneath The Owl’-CD
(Volcom Entertainment)
La prima volta che mi sono imbattuto nei Riverboat Gamblers è stato in occasione della compilation ‘Volcom Entertainment Rock-Tested’, e ricordo che già allora mi colpirono per la loro genuina immediatezza. Oggi che ho la possibilità di ascoltare per intero ‘Underneath The Owl’ (che è la loro sesta uscita ufficiale), non posso che confermare la loro capacità congenita, che ostentano in modo naturale, di assemblare melodie che arrivano a bersaglio al primo istante, pronte per girare in testa e per rimanerci un bel po’. Le coordinate sonore sono senza dubbio quelle del punk-rock, di stampo melodico, con sfumature morbide che non definirei ‘emo’, quanto piuttosto ‘brit’ o ‘college’. L’album appare molto eterogeneo, caratteristica forse accentuata dalla particolarità che tutti e cinque i musicisti si cimentano dietro al microfono, dividendosi le canzoni. Il risultato è anche estremamente catchy, pronto per salpare verso lidi commerciali di ampia portata, anche se poggia su un motore grezzo ed impulsivo. È facile pensare che la band texana stia lì lì per esplodere a livello planetario, ma nel frattempo godiamoci questa sequenza di pezzi killer prima che il mainstream ce li rubi.

ARMORED SAINT
‘La Raza’-CD
(Metal Blade)
È soltanto il sesto album in studio, questo ‘La Raza’, nonostante gli Armored Saint siano in giro dai primi anni ottanta. Ed è un disco che non sconvolge, che non rompe gli schemi e che non stupisce con trovate spettacolari, ma nemmeno tradisce gli appassionati della band californiana (che, a quanto pare, non sono pochi, nonostante le uscite col contagocce). L’album batte sullo stomaco al solito con pezzi come ‘Loose Cannon’, ‘Head On’ e ‘Left Hook From Right Field’, aggiungendo qualche altra canzone non proprio di spessore, ma comunque decorosa. Tutto sommato però il risultato globale è vibrante, quadrato e piacevole. Nient’altro che U.S.-power senza troppi fronzoli, in sostanza. Il dominio di John Bush dietro al microfono è a dir poco straripante, supportato dall’usuale solidità espressa dalla sezione ritmica composta dai veterani Joey Vera e Gonzo Sandoval, permettendo al combo statunitense di non mostrare nemmeno una sfumatura di ruggine e reggendo pienamente il confronto con la maggior parte delle band più giovani e modaiole. Un ritorno riuscito, insomma, sperando di non dover aspettare altri dieci anni per un loro nuovo disco.

GRAND MAGUS
‘Hammer Of The North’-CD

La trasformazione sta per essere completata: partiti come act doom/stoner dalle sfumature quasi psichedeliche, i tre svedesi capitananti da Janne ”JB” Christoffersson (che, per inciso, ha abbandonato definitivamente gli Spiritual Beggars) hanno finalmente raggiunto quella che probabilmente è la loro dimensione sonora ricercata ed inedita: un heavy-metal stagionato, figlio naturale della NWOBHM, potente e solenne. Senza andare troppo per il sottile, ‘Hammer Of The North’ galoppa a briglia sciolta nelle praterie del classico suono metallaro anni ottanta, esasperando l’immediatezza della proposta attraverso riff massacranti, vocals acute e stordenti, ritmiche dinamiche. Quello che innalza l’album a paladino di una nuova riscossa di questo sound (che sia il nuovo trend del prossimo futuro?) è un’ispirazione fulgida e cristallina, che non cerca compromessi o scorciatoie verso l’accessibilità, evitando anche le scopiazzature o le “riletture” mirate. Cioè lasciando sgorgare l’heavy-metal libero dalla fonte verso gli amplificatori. Ora bisogna capire se quest’album è l’apice della loro espressione sonora, o possiamo aspettarci addirittura un ulteriore passo in avanti.

THE DANGEROUS SUMMER
‘The Reach For The Sun’-CD
(Hopeless/Rude)
Non so quanto effettivamente possa essere pericolosa una stagione come l’estate, ma quella rappresentata dai The Dangerous Summer non pare esserlo poi tanto. Le ragioni che governano il punkettino emo(tivo) del quartetto originario di Ellicott City, Maryland, sono le stesse messe in campo tempo addietro da band come Jimmy Eat World o Samiam, e cioè chitarre pacate, orecchiabilità a livelli di guardia, chorus vincenti da sigla di telefilm del tardo pomeriggio, per l’ennesimo gruppetto di facce pulite da ragazzi per bene. Ciò non toglie che ‘The Reach For The Sun’ si presenti come una successione di possibili hit da classifica (per la verità tutti omologati e molto simili tra loro), a cominciare dall’opener-track ‘Where I Want To Be’. La professionalità della confezione è fuori discussione, e così la resa finale delle singole canzoni. Forse, in una ipotetica competizione tra band ultra-mainstream di questo tipo, i Dangerous Summer si posizionerebbero nei primi posti, tra quelle più godibili e meno zuccherose. Resta il fatto incontrovertibile che si tratta di roba per adolescenti, quindi se ne consiglia l’ascolto solo in condizioni di rilassatezza e senza impegno intellettuale alcuno.

Volcom’s 2010 VQS Starfish Surf Series – Huntinton Beach, Ca

The day was finally here and the with 160 competitors on the beach frothing from their upper lips to sign up, it was time to kick off another beautiful year of the Totally Crustaceous Tour. The Starfish Surf Series was the first event ever for the VQS so it is only appropriate to kick off the season with it. This year would prove to be one of the best of all time. The Southside of Huntington Beach Pier was raging!

With shredding going on in the water and shenanigans going on all day long on the beach, the energy was at an all time high. This year’s season brought the addition of the 10 & under Squids Division. These little dudes were so excited to have their own division and show of their skills in front of a packed beach of spectators. Huge props go out to little Kade Matson who wrapped his board around the pier piling. Standouts for the day in the Girls Division was Jenna Balester who took out Sarah Taylor in the final for the win. Taylor Clark took out the pack in the Groms Division and snagged a heap of prizes and Custom BMX bike. Taking the Muscle Milk $250 Juniors first place prize was Ian Crane and winning the Electric Volt Thrower award and the Pro-Am final was Ryan Carlson who walked away with $550 and grip of goodies! Congrats to all the Starfish winners!

On August 31, Good Charamel Records dives head first into the colorful world of Japanese rock/pop culture with the release of their ‘I LOVE J-ROCK’ compilation. Hub Music Factory annuncia il ritorno in Italia di The Misfits!

I “disadattati”, capitanati da Dez Cadena e Jerry Only, saranno di nuovo dalle nostre parti per uno speciale show all’interno del loro European Invasion tour 2010 previsto il 2 settembre al Carroponte di Sesto San Giovanni, Milano. I Misfits hanno più di 30 anni di carriera alle spalle, sono i capostipiti di una certa via del punk rock che omaggia l’horror e, seppur in parte, il glam. Originari di Lodi (non il paese alle porte di Milano, ma un sobborgo del New Jersey), da 3 decenni sono un punto di riferimento per il rock e oggi venerati come icona – veri classici – del genere. La loro è una storia tormentata a base di lotte legali, scioglimenti e reunion; ma soprattutto di dischi importanti come ‘Legacy Of Brutality’ (1985) e ‘American Psycho’ (1997). Atttraverso le “bufere”, il merito di aver saputo tenere in vita la band, durante questi decenni, è senza dubbio di Jerry Only che ancora oggi crea ad ogni show un muro di suono e testosterone da far invidia a molti. Non a caso, un gruppo come gli Slipknot li definisce una delle migliori macchine da palco nella storia recente del rock.

FAR FROM FINISHED release ‘FORGETTABLE’, AUGUST 31

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Emerging as the new standard from Massachusetts’ storied musical legacy, FAR FROM FINISHED have announced August 31, 2010 as the official release date for their highly-anticipated Old Shoe Records’ debut, ironically titled ‘FORGETTABLE’. Vocalist Steve Neary explained the title, “…being cocky just never seemed to fit with this band. ‘Forgettable’ is just that. It’s an attempt to acknowledge and move on. Its a effort to be happy.” Spending the better part of a full calendar year refining the details, FAR FROM FINISHED combined everything from a string quartet to a children’s choir to craft their most ambitious collection of tracks to date. These seasoned songwriters combined unconventional instrumentation, a general disregard for expectation, and a well-rounded ear for a timeless tune, to prove once again, FAR FROM FINISHED is so much more than punk. With two studio releases under their belt, FFF’s ability to harness a real sense of melody, meshed with an infectious delivery, has established the band as a true to form diamond in the rough. The band talked about how this go ‘round musically would be received. “I think whenever you release anything there’s gonna be that feeling inside you that maybe rejection’s on the horizon, but honestly you can’t think like that. In the past, anything we’ve released has been quite different from whatever came before it, so in a sense we’re ready for whatever. Fear’s not your friend, so we could give a fuck if people don’t approve of the musical direction we took with this record,” Neary emphasized. Going to work with legendary producer Jim Siegel (Dropkick Murphys, The Unseen) at the famed Outpost Studios, ‘FORGETTABLE’ is anchored by the band’s proven ability to turn punk rock disposition into a dynamic 3-minute piece of music. In addition to being the band’s most diverse collection of songs, ‘FORGETTABLE’ also remains one of the band’s most personally revealing efforts just the same. Guitarist Oscar Capps detailed the therapy of it all, “Lyrically and musically we tried not to hold anything back this time around. We’ve got stories about drugs, fathers, wives, and mothers…The good, the bad, the ugly. It’s not so much where a song came from, but where it goes and the experience of sharing it with someone else that might relate. Punk rock shows have always been a hell of a lot more fun then seeing a shrink.” FAR FROM FINISHED will spend the duration of 2010 on the road to support ‘FORGETTABLE’. Recently wrapping their triumph of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour, the band will celebrate the album’s release with an epic hometown show on September 4th, 2010, before heading overseas to spend the fall performing throughout Europe. Bassist and all around good guy, Pesky, talked about the kind of thinking the band values during such a critical time, “We just bought a new cargo van and on the dash in sharpie is written “dream big, worry little”. It’s amusing to think of a 45-year old plumber driving around with that written on his dash.” Primed to share what could arguably be called the band’s finest hour on record, hesitation, for this band is just not an option. FAR FROM FINISHED is just as the band’s namesake suggests and as for ‘FORGETTABLE’, well…hardly.

LIFE OF AGONY INTERVIEW

An original way to celebrate the passed twenty years since the release of legendary first album ‘River Runs Red’. The Life Of Agony, originating in Brooklyn – New York back on the map with this new live recorded in Brussels during one of their two sold out live! We trade few words with Sal, drummer of the band, to tell us what’s new with Life Of Agony.

SD: How was born the idea to make a new live album around the leggendary ‘River Runs Red’, and why Brussel and not New York City or another city?

Sal: It just worked out that way with the timing and organization of the whole crew involved in the dvd making. Besides our shows in Belgium are always huge and it was an amazing show that night.

SD: Could you tell us more about your relationship with I Scream Records? How did you arrive at I Scream and what happened with Roadrunner Records?

Sal: So far it seems good with I Scream, they are really behind the band and still believe in LOA.

SD: In the beginning of your DVD the first things that Alan said is that in the beginning you were labelled as a New York Hardcore band, how’s your rapport and connection with the New York Hardcore scene? Did you have feel yourself part of any particular music scene?

Sal: We are not hardcore never was, although we are friends and respect the bands in the hardcore scene. I do believe we had a lot to do with the scene and influencing the bands that came out of NYC.

SD: Do you have another occupation besides the music? What’s a normal day for a LOA’s member?

Sal: I personally do everything I can to stay busy. I have a new album coming out by my new band A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH, I work sometimes as a Rigger for the entertainment industry, Fix my house and do all the other things average people do.

SD: How much New York City influenced your sound and songwriting? You toured with artists like Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Limp Bizkit, System Of A Down which are basically from the West Coast, have you ever thought to move there to improve your “music business”?

Sal: For me it was Carnivore that influenced my playing style and the result of me forming Type O Negative with Peter Steele and learning from him. I never cared for the west coast style.

SD: Did you follow personally the mix session of this album? What you can tell us about the experience with Joey Z?

Sal: We pretty much let Joey have at it and do his thing with it. He worked hard on it and it shows.

SD: What do you think of the political situation of the United States in 2010.

Sal: Hate it. Controlled by big corporations and its all a lie.

SD: What do you think about the music business nowadays. Lots of things changed from the 80’s and 90’s, the CDs seems already fucked up, what do you think will be the next step for the music industry? What do you think a music artists could do to live with his own music in 2010?

Sal; It’s an even tougher business, american fans are so jaded and have the attention span of a 2 year old to anything new. America thrives on farm fed music on tv and just follow the herd like sheep.

SD: What are the next steps for Life Of Agony?

Sal: Well we are gearing up to tour Europe in Aug 2010. As far as a new album I do not know. I know that we are running out of time if we choose to continue with out a new album down the road. But it’s complicated, and sensitive when we try to work on a song so it’s baby steps to arrange. Hopefully we can put something out eventually even if it’s a 2 song sampler just to tease the fans that there may be a future for a new Life Of Agony record.

L’instancabile “international hardcore superstar” Danny Diablo insieme al rapper Grizz Rock della leggendaria Ruff Ryders Crew nel 2008 danno vita ad un nuovo progetto che prende il nome di KAOS 13. Crossover che unisce pesantissimi riff di chitarra e atmosfere dark con metriche e basi hardcore hip hop. I due frontman definiscono i KAOS 13 come il loro progetto più vario e meglio riuscito degli ultimi anni – “con i KAOS 13 siamo riusciti a creare un mix perfetto di tutte le nostre influenze: dal New York Hardcore all’heavy metal, passando per l’hip hop più street. Il suono dei KAOS 13 è qualcosa di rivoluzionario!”

Citando le parole di Danny Diablo aka Lord Ezec “le registrazioni di ‘Street Warriors’ sono durate più di un anno, in questo arco di tempo abbiamo lavorato in studio con diversi amici come Ill Bill, G Fella, Slaine, Dj Apokalypze e molti altri. Il risultato di questo anno di lavoro l’avrete tra le mani a breve, e non ne rimarrete delusi”.

LONG ISLAND, NY’S MISERY ANNOUNCE UPCOMING TOUR DATES WITH DEVILDRIVER, KITTIE, AND KATAKLYSM MISERY’S UPCOMING FULL-LENGTH, ‘EVIL IS CROWNED’, SLATED FOR RELEASE IN JANUARY 2011

Long Island, NY’s MISERY are pleased to announce their upcoming tour with metal greats DEVILDRIVER, and supporting acts KITTIE and KATAKLYSM. The tour starts next Wednesday, August 25th in Jermyn, PA, and comes to a halt in West Hollywood, CA on September 16th, 2010. MISERY recently wrapped up recording on their gripping, in your face, highly anticipated full length release, ‘Evil Is Crowned’. The album was recorded at Systems 2 Recording Studio in Brooklyn, NY and was mastered at Manhattan’s world-famous Sterling Sound. Production credits on Evil is Crowned go to Joey Z from fellow heavy-hitting New York metal band, Life of Agony. The album is scheduled to be released January 2011 via Super Metal Records, and the title track, ‘Evil Is Crowned’ is scheduled to debut on Sirius XM Liquid Metal in the coming months. Currently, two other tracks from ‘Evil Is Crowned’ are spinning on Sirius-XM’s Liquid Metal and have been receiving rave reviews throughout the metal community. Formed in the early 90’s, MISERY are known for their powerfully aggressive sound, often being compared to the likes of Pantera and Metallica with an eerie Black Sabbath undertone. MISERY are also recognized for their rigorous touring schedule, including support for large acts such as Napalm Death, Buckcherry and Testament. After hearing MISERY’s 2008 full length release, ‘Fifteen Years Of Aggression’, producer Joey Z took such a liking to the band that he asked MISERY to support Life Of Agony on their Winter 2009 tour. Playing with such an eclectic mix of bands has helped to expose MISERY to a world of new fans! In 2009, MISERY reached the #12 position on the FMQB Metal Radio charts, and currently can be heard on cable music outlets such as Music Choice and DMX.

A LIFE ONCE LOST DEBUT NEW IN-STUDIO WEBISODE ON METAL INJECTION TOMORROW AT 1PM-NEW TRACK, STREAMING NOW ON MYSPACE

Pennsylvania metallers A LIFE ONCE LOST are pleased to announce the debut of a new in-studio webisode tomorrow at 1pm ET at wwwMetal Injection.net! Also hitting the web today is a brand new track taken from A LIFE ONCE LOST’s upcoming untitled full length, entitled ‘Expression Of Hate’. Head over to the band’s MySpace to hear the track now! The track was recorded in Philadelphia at The Sabolick Brother’s Compound. “This is a pre-production track from the impending new A LIFE ONCE LOST album,” states guitarist Douglas Sabolick. “We have returned to our punishing rhythmic roots and hope to beat the listener into submission over and over again. We started trends and moved on to different things while that scene and the bands in it blew up in our wake. We are back to cash in.” Conceived in a Philadelphia, PA suburb in 1999, A LIFE ONCE LOST features Robert Meadows (Vocals), Robert Carpenter (Guitar), Douglas Sabolick AKA Snake Sustaine (Guitar) and Justin Graves (Drums). The band recorded their first two albums on Robotic Empire and their third album was released on Deathwish Inc. Following the release of their third album, the band signed with Ferret Music and unleashed their 2005 opus ‘Hunter’ which reached #28 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, #39 on the US Top Independent Album Chart, and has sold over 40,000 copies to date. ‘Hunter’ was followed up in 2007 with ‘Iron Gag’ which charted on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #44. A LIFE ONCE LOST recently announced their new management team, Miss Management, under Maria Ferrero. The band plans to release their follow-up to ‘Iron Gag‘ before year’s end. Look for a United States tour to follow the album’s release.
