Reunion tour dei the SELECTER, celebre ska band inglese in attività dal 1979. Per questo speciale tour i Selecter suoneranno tutti i brani del loro celebre LP ‘Too Much Pressure’, e altre hit del loro repertorio. I SELECTER suoneranno il 18 Maggio 2011 al Circolo degli Artisti di Roma, il 19 alle Officine Cantelmo di Lecce, il 20 al Velvet di Rimini e il 21 al Pieffe Factory di Gorizia. ‘Too Much Pressure’ è il disco più famoso pubblicato dai the Selecter, ed uno degli album più importanti della stagione ska inglese dei primi anni ’80. I Selecter in tour in Italia a Maggio 2011 suoneranno per intero il loro famoso masterpiece, e altri successi del loro repertorio. ‘Too Much Pressure’ insieme agli esordi discografici di Specials e Madness è uno dei dischi fondamentali del movimento ska, e i Selecter una delle band inglesi più blasonate degli ultimi 30 anni. I Selecter, come pochi altri, riuscirono a mescolare le correnti punk, reggae e ska, creando uno stile unico e ancora oggi imitato. I due cantanti dei Selecter Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson e la ragazza Pauline Black per stile e look sono sempre stati considerati icone del 2 Tone Ska. Tra i brani che hanno reso celebri i Selecter, tutti compresi sul loro masterpiece ‘Too Much Pressure’, troviamo ‘Three Minute Hero’, ‘Missing Words’, ‘On My Radio’ e la titletrack ‘Too Much Pressure’ (considerata un caposaldo dello ska inglese insieme a ‘One Step Beyond’ dei Madness e ‘A Message To You Rudy’ nella versione degli Specials). I Selecter si sono formati nel 1979, e sono tra i maggiori esponenti del movimento 2 Tone Ska insieme a gruppi come Bad Manners, The Specials, The Beat e Madness. Il nome della band deriva dal termine selector, corrispettivo giamaicano per DJ. Il gruppo nasce da un’idea di Just Neol Davies e John Bradbury, che poi diventerà il batterista dei The Specials. Pauline Black è stata la cantante principale dalla nascita della band nell’Agosto del 1979. L’album di debutto della band, ‘Too Much Pressure’, pubblicato dalla 2 Tone Records e dalla Chrysalis Records nel 1980, è stato disco d’oro in Inghilterra. Nel 1981 esce il secondo LP ‘Celebrate The Bullet’. Alla fine del 1981 i Selecter si separano. Dopo lo scioglimento, Pauline Black comincia a lavorare per teatro e la televisione, apparendo in varie serie TV e film. Nel 1991 Black e Davies riformano i Selecter, pubblicano nuovi LP (‘The Happy Album’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Cruel Britannia’, ‘Pucker et Real To Reel’) e realizzano una serie di tour in giro per il mondo. THE HACIENDA On TOUR ‘Picking Pennies Off The Floor’ IL DEBUTTO SU LUNGA DISTANZA
Un album eterogeneo, dalle atmosfere variegate e ricco di influenze che hanno contaminato la stesura dei pezzi. Dinamico e potente, l’album ‘Picking Pennies Off The Floor’ è stato scritto dal quintetto fiorentino in occasione del lungo tour di supporto a ‘Conversation Less EP’. Registrato presso i Folsom Prison nel Settembre 2010 in compagnia del produttore Lorenzo Buzzigoli, ‘Picking Pennies Off The Floor’ si rivela disco incredibilmente maturo e consapevole. L’album contiene 12 brani che abbracciano alcune sonorità differenti rispetto a quelle dell’EP, tracciando così un nuovo percorso e aprendo scenari interessanti per il futuro. Le modalità di composizione dei brani sono rimaste piuttosto fedeli a quelle che erano le abitudini precedenti. La ricerca dell’armonia come culmine della forma canzone si sviluppa attraverso linee melodiche che si stratificano con cori ed incisivi arrangiamenti di chitarre, organi e fiati. Con ‘Picking Pennies Off The Floor’ (tradotto raccogliendo spiccioli da terra), la band riesce ad amalgamare il differente bagaglio musicale di ciascun membro della band. Il quintetto si pone la domanda di come far coesistere le proprie attitudini in una realtà sociale e culturale cosi diversa dal proprio approccio, cercando di superare quella fastidiosa sensazione di trovarsi nel posto sbagliato al momento sbagliato.

Con i THE ROOTS come backing band, Matt Berninger (The National), Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket), Sharon Jones e Lour Reed come guest vocalist ‘THE ROAD FROM MEMPHIS’ si annuncia come un disco imperdibile. La carriera di Booker T. Jones gli ha portato fama internazionale, premi prestigiosi (3 Grammy, l’ingresso nella Hall Of Fame), uno status da icona come uno degli architetti della musica soul americana. Nel il nuovo album ‘The Road From Memphis’, in uscita su Anti-Records il prossimo 10 Maggio, Jones ripercorre il suo percorso dalla città natale Memphis, Tennessee sul palcoscenico del mondo. L’album fa seguito al debutto per Anti-. ‘Potato Hole’ del 2009 che è valso a Jones un Grammy per Best Pop Instrumental Album. Prodotto dallo stesso Jones di The Roots e Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith), ‘The Road From Memphis‘ è stato registrato dal mastermind della Daptone Records Gabriel Roth, con i The Roots impiegati come backing band. ‘The Road From Memphis’ non si riferisce solo al viaggio di Booker T, ma all’evoluzione nel complesso della musica soul, che proprio Booker T ha collaborato a inventare, mentre dalla natìa Memphis si spostava verso Detroit, Philadelphia e oltre. Tutte le sfaccettature del soul sono rappresentate in questo album grazie anche alla prestigiosa lista di cantanti: da Matt Berninger di The National insieme a Sharon Jones su ‘Representing Memphis’ a Yim Yames dei My Morning Jacket passando per Lou Reed che partecipa a ‘The Bronx’. L’album offre inoltre una rarissima partecipazione vocale a opera di Booker T stesso, che su ‘Down In Memphis’ racconta in prima persona della sua città natìa. Brooklyn born Brian Bonz has covered a lot of ground for his age, but the talented singer/songwriter has been hard at work and it seems to be paying off. Currently out touring with The Get Up Kids and gearing up for a new music video release, Brian stops in to Manhattan’s Zen Bikes for a little impromptu solo performance of ‘Terror In the Bonneville’ for the BreakThru Radio original series Hear & There.

Torna in Italia, per la prima volta dal 1996, Christopher Joseph Ward, aka CJ, ultimo bassista della piu’ grande Punk-Rock band mai esistita: i Ramones.
CJ si unisce al gruppo nel 1989, con la missione impossibile di sostituire un ancor illuminato Dee Dee, ovvero Mr. Punk-Rock in persona. Nonostante la diffidenza iniziale ed il compito improbo, CJ riuscí a dare il “cambio della guardia” a quella che in seguito sarebbe stata riconosciuta come una delle figure chiave della storia del Rock’n'Roll, facendolo perdipiu’ in modo degno, e guadagnandosi da subito l’amore incodizionato di tutti i Ramones-fanatics, nonché la fiducia dei suoi stessi compagni di gruppo. In 8 anni di militanza nei Ramones, CJ ha pure cantato ben 10 canzoni su album ufficiali, 2 delle quali composte di suo stesso pugno, dimostrando di avere anche un’ottima voce. Il suo “one, two, three, four!” prima di ogni canzone diventó un vero e proprio marchio di fabbrica dei loro concerti. Dopo lo scioglimento dei fratellini, il 6 agosto 1996, CJ ha preferito ritirarsi a vita privata, invece di rincorrere facili guadagni sfruttando il proprio status. Torna a calcare i palchi solo nel nel 2000 CJ, con il suo progetto Bad Chopper, nome legato al suo amore per le motociclette, con i quali gira il mondo e realizza un album nel 2008. Ma il passato e’ duro a morire, e la Ramonesmania a piú di dieci anni di distanza non ha fatto altro che crescere e proliferare nelle nuove e vecchie generazioni, convincendo CJ a ricongiungersi con un vecchio compagno d’avventure: quel Daniel Ray gia’ produttore di album come ‘Halfway To Sanity’, ‘Brain Drain’ e ‘Adios Amigos’, nonche’ eccellente chitarrista e co-compositore di numerosi classici della band (‘I Wanna Live’, ‘Pet Cemetary’, ‘Poison Heart’, ‘I Believe In Miracles’…). Il loro show, gia’ esploso in Giappone, Inghilterra, Sud America e USA, e’ da molti considerato non un semplice tributo, ma “quanto di piu’ vicino possibile ad uno show dei Fratellini”. Dimenticatevi baracconate vendute a nome “Ramone” quindi: la garanzia e’ un ragazzo che a 24 anni ha avuto la forza ed il coraggio di sostituire degnamente un proprio eroe, realizzando il sogno di molti di “far parte della propria band preferita”. Chi altri a quell’eta’ avrebbe avuto tanta ‘Strenght To Endure’, come canta lui stesso in uno dei pezzi chiave di ‘Mondo Bizzarro’? A supportare la band per tutte le date del tour ci saranno gli spezzini Manges, veterani e portabandiera del Punk-Rock italiano. Tre album, decine di singoli e raccolte prodotte e distribuite in tutto il mondo, svariati tour in Italia, Europa ed America…Il loro ultimo album, ‘Bad Juju’, e’ un successo di critica e vendite, ed ha visto la partecipazione di figure chiave del Punk-Rock anni ’90 come Ben Weasel, Dan Vapid (Screeching Weasel, Riverdales) e Joe Queer (the Queers), nelle vesti di produttore. Collaborazioni che rappresentano un vero e proprio passaggio del testimone, avvalorato dal recente tour di locali (tutti sold-out): i Manges sono attualmente una delle piu’ importanti ed ammirate realta’ del Punk-Rock mondiale. E sí, sono italiani! Dal 1993 si sono guadagnati l’esperienza ed i gradi necessari a dividere il palco con con uno dei loro eroi. ‘There Are Rules’-CD

Se volessimo assegnare il giusto peso a questo ‘There Are Rules’, dovremmo ricordarci che si tratta del disco di reunion di una delle band cardine dell’arcipelago (si diceva così?) emo. Se volessimo caricare ulteriore zavorra di responsabilità, potremmo sottolineare la necessità di sorprendere, di sondare nuovi percorsi musicali, di pervenire ad una forma di pop ricercato ed evoluto quasi “arty”. I Get Up Kids decidono di guardare agli anni ottanta, al synth-pop, all’electro-wave. E con un inizio (‘Tithe’) che è roboante ed urgente (à la Foo Fighters, potremmo dire), quando arrivano le tastiere scialbe di ‘Shatter Your Lungs’ o le melodie smancerose di ‘Automatic’ si resta sconcertati ancor di più. La band di Kansas City prolunga l’agonia con ‘Pararelevant’, ‘Better Lie’ e ‘The Widow Paris’, brutte copie di cliché Smiths, Simple Minds e Franz Ferdinand falsati dall’inattendibilità dell’ispirazione. Non c’è nulla di innovativo in questo disco. Si ha piuttosto l’impressione che a provarle tutte, le strade, non si pervenga a nessuna meta degna, soprattutto se non si è guidati dal navigatore del fervore creativo, per una band che forse faceva meglio a prolungare un altro po’ il proprio silenzio.

TWO TEARS
‘Eat People’-7″
(Kind Turkey Records)
Tre pezzi scritti e registrati in tre continenti diversi (Parigi, Dubai, New York City). Questa è una delle particolarità di ‘Eat People’, nuovo singolo firmato Two Tears, progetto musicale che si racchiude tutto nel personaggio carismatico di Kerry Davis, cantantessa/chitarrista dai trascorsi hardcore/punk di un certo rilievo (Red Aunts, Beehive And The Barracudas). Il mini tre pezzi, che vede il coinvolgimento totale della musicista californiana (sua anche la copertina), stampato in 500 copie numerate a mano, trasmette l’essenza nomade della one-(wo)man-band, ribelle del rock’n’roll che ha deciso di immolare la propria esistenza alla causa abbracciando una Gibson e pestando una grancassa. Con le schitarrate sbilenche di ‘Eat People’ dal sapore quasi grunge, con il garage vecchio stampo di ‘Heisse Hexe’ e con la marcetta rallentata ‘Senso Unico’ dal ritornello in uno strampalato italiano sembra di ascoltare delle primigenie Hole che esaltano le capacità e l’essenza più cruda del rock, oppure ancora delle Sleater-Kinney senza fissa dimora. È, detto più semplicemente, il talento genuino di Kerry Davis allo stato puro, senza nessuna costruzione fittizia a contorno.

‘La Stessa Barca’-CD
(La Canzonetta/Sintesi 3000)
La questione gira, volenti o nolenti, attorno alla produzione di Steve Albini. Tra chi afferma che se ne poteva fare tranquillamente a meno, considerata la tipologia di ballata indie-malinconica in cui sono specializzati i quattro musicisti partenopei, e chi rivendica l’importanza del particolare e una sottigliezza di suono che non si riesce a riprodurre in Italia. Il sottoscritto, giusto per la cronaca, fa parte della seconda fazione. Ora, ‘La Stessa Barca’ non è il meglio della produzione griffata Di Bella & Co., non giriamoci troppo attorno (per il sottoscritto al top resiste ancora ‘K Album’). Gli slanci chitarristici di ‘Ombre’ (primo singolo), di ‘Malavera’ (provate a sostituire il napoletano con l’inglese, J Mascis mica è così lontano), di ‘Turnamme A Casa’ (forse il top del disco) costituiscono però un ottimo esempio di componimento moderno e ispirato. Certo, poi c’è il testo di ‘Cenere’ che fa perdere inevitabilmente punti, anche per gli standard a cui ci ha abituato la band nel passato recente e non, ma sono cose che possono capitare. Il forfait di Armando Cotugno (basso) non sembra aver avuto ripercussioni particolari, anche se con lui i 24 Grana erano indubbiamente un’altra cosa.

‘The Night Stays’-CD

La formazione a tre composta da Tony Wakeford, Eraldo Bernocchi e Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari potrebbe quasi essere considerata una super-band, valutati i precedenti dei singoli musicisti. Il loro ‘The Night Stays’ rifulge di nera spiritualità attraverso ballate mortuarie che all’istante evidenziano una diretta discendenza Death In June e Current 93. Ed infatti brani come ‘Hide And Seek’, ‘God Is Right’ o ‘Come Back’ posseggono il pathos che evocava l’ascolto muto e religioso degli artisti sopra citati. Un’attitudine che i gufi hanno metabolizzato e sviluppato con dedizione nel tempo, evidentemente, forti di uno straniante tocco retrò, quasi fosse modernariato synth-rock. Voci filtrate quasi artificiali, drum-machine, toni minacciosi e cupi, tanto da apparire quasi dimessi, decadenti e in alcuni casi perfino oltretombali. Pronti ad impiegare ululati, gocce di pianoforte, arpeggi rarefatti, dimostrano buona vocazione, in particolare in frangenti di indiscutibile fascino e torbida (avvolgente) poesia nobilmente lirica quali la title-track, ‘Idiot’s Waltz’ (straordinaria) e ‘The New Parade’. Gli amanti del dark e del neo-folk hanno di che gioire; agli altri si consiglia un ascolto preventivo.

BETTY PAGE – retrospective

Dall’11 Dicembre 2010 all’11 Febbraio 2011 si è tenuta a Bologna presso la galleria d’arte Contemporary Concept la mostra ‘Betty Page’ a cura di Filippo e Maurizio Rebuzzini, la più avvincente esposizione fotografica al mondo mai realizzata dedicata alla regina delle pin-up. La mostra è stata realizzata con il contributo di Nital (distributore Nikon) e Roland DG Mid Europe. Son state esposte per l’occasione trentadue stampe in bianconero in formato 84×110cm e 38×50cm che, dopo l’acquisizione a scanner per la conversione degli originali in file digitali, sono state pazientemente lavorate ossia, è stato fatto ciò che originariamente sarebbe dovuto essere fatto in fase di stampa e finissaggio, se solo Paula e Irving Klaw avessero in qualche misura assecondato la propria azione fotografica.

Gli scatti immortalano uno dei miti dell’erotismo degli anni Cinquanta, ovvero la più fotografata e desiderata pin-up model del tempo: la signorina Betty Page (da qualcuno e in altre documentazioni chiamata “Bettie Page”). Da qualche tempo, molti parlano di lei. Fino a qualche stagione fa, era conosciuta soltanto presso un’identificata cerchia di cultori. Il cambio di rotta è stato avviato per merito e a causa di un film di David Lynch, ‘Lost Highway’ (in Italia, ‘Strade Perdute’; nelle sale dal giugno 1998), nel quale la protagonista si ispira esplicitamente al modello esteriore di Betty Page.

Comunque, oggigiorno, la fama acquisita è ormai tanto universale che per la sua scomparsa, l’11 dicembre 2008, si sono impegnate tutte le agenzie giornalistiche internazionali. Betty posava sia nei Camera Club, circoli per fotografi non professionisti, sia nella sala di posa nella quale Irving e Paula Klaw producevano immagini maliziose e scabrose, commercializzate attraverso circuiti di vendita per corrispondenza sostanzialmente furtivi, occulti, sul filo della legalità. Ai tempi malvisto dalla cultura puritana anglosassone, tanto da essere perfino indagato dall’FBI, che lo accusò di traviare la gioventù (e più precisamente di favorire, con le sue immagini, la vendita di giubbotti in pelle e coltelli a serramanico), oggi Irving Klaw è considerato un maestro e un caposcuola. Però, come rivelato, era la sorella Paula che fotografava: dunque è a lei che vanno attribuiti tutti gli eventuali meriti.

Sabato 26 febbraio si skatea mascherati presso il Ponte Nuovo Skatepark di Via Ancona 43 a Ravenna dalle ore 15.00 e per tutto il pomeriggio (al calar del sole si accendono le luci). Per l’occasione verranno raccolti fondi destinati ai primi lavori di ampliamento in cemento Do It Yourself (fai da te!) dello skatepark. Con la speranza di incentivare gli incassi per i lavori alcuni skater concederanno del loro materiale destinando l’incasso ai lavori di ampliamento. Verrà inoltre offerto da bere e da mangiare invitando i partecipanti a portare a loro volta dolci e bibite per un “buffet di carnevale condiviso”! Durante la giornata lo skater con la migliore maschera vincerà una tavola da skateboard.

Bmx Carnival Jam 2011

2011! Ci siamo, manca ormai veramente poco alla terza edizione della Carnival Jam che ormai per tradizione si terrà ancora una volta a Milano presso la pool di Lambrate in via Feltre (grazie ai ragazzi di Lambro skatepark per la collaborazione). Sabato 5 marzo a partire dalla mattina ci si trova per festeggiare il Carnevale all’insegna di una giornata ricca di bmx, tricks, gente presa bene, coriandoli e frittelle; la formula è sempre la stessa free session senza tante menate giusto per il gusto di poter girare e confrontarsi con molti riders che già stanno confermando la loro presenza per questa nuova edizione! Ancora una volta un grande numero di addetti ai lavori ha confermato la loro presenza, Salad Days Magazine e Behind Mag documenteranno l’intera jam, Lobster e Calle Marconi metteranno gadgets da scagliare a fine giornata e i ragazzi di Extrem Bike e Fantharco ci aspetteranno dalle 18.30 per un bunny hop contest a poche centinaia di metri dalla pool, per l’occasione birre free per tutti fino all’arrivo della municipale!
