NEW THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR PUNK ROCK BOWLING 2012!!
Punk Rock Bowling was started back in 1999 as a way to bring the independent music community together for an annual party. It has since grown into a 3 day festival in downtown Las Vegas that brings out fans and bands alike from all over the world. Make no mistake, this is a PUNK ROCK festival that features some of the best bands over the past 35+ years, from the old school pioneers and classics to mainstays and up and comers. Founders Shawn and Mark Stern of BYO Records and seminal SoCal band Youth Brigade have been heavily involved in the PUNK ROCK community since the late ‘70’s and spend countless hours scouring their record collections, memories and abilities to reach out to old friends and new to put together an amazing line-up every year. This is a 3 day outdoor festival starting in the late afternoon and featuring 8 great bands each day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday celebrated with 5,000 of your close personal punk rock friends. And if that’s not enough, their will be 4 late night club shows each night in smaller more intimate surroundings featuring more great bands as well as some special surprises. All in all, over 60 bands will perform throughout the weekend.
HOTELS:
Most of our hotels will be located downtown this year. Punk Rock Bowling has struck a deal with some of the best hotels in the downtown area. Our main hotel will be the Golden Nugget, while the pool party hotel will be the Gold Spike. Our budget hotel is the Las Vegas Club.
BOWLING:
The tournament is expanding! In an effort to accommodate more bowlers and to eliminate night bowling, for the first time PRB will be bowling in two different locations. Buses will be provided to shuttle bowlers to each bowling alley from downtown. If you want to bowl, you have a great chance this year since we are expanding. Qualcuno potrebbe pensare che la scena dark-wave (a livello internazionale) sia sostanzialmente ferma, dopo i fasti irraggiungibili degli anni ottanta (Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees) e qualche remissiva scintilla trascinatasi pure negli anni novanta. Non è così, of course. Di dischi ne continuano ad uscire, ed anche di buona qualità, tanto che gli appassionati continuano ad avere modo di aggiornare e rinfrescare la propria discografia senza doversi rivolgere per forza al passato. I Dream Affair rientrano a tutti gli effetti nel filone, e il loro ‘Endless Days’ (che è il full-lenght di debutto) percorre attraverso nove tappe quelle che sono le diverse influenze che possono aver contraddistinto il movimento. Dal dark synth-pop della title-track, alla coldwave di ‘Lucid’, fino ai riflessi post-punk di ‘Apology’, il terzetto di Brooklyn sfrutta tutti gli stereotipi a disposizione, si trastulla beatamente nei cliché, sviscera ogni riferimento senza alcuna vergogna (‘Silent Story’ sembra veramente un inedito datato dei Cure e recuperato casualmente da qualche polveroso archivio), realizzando un prodotto che sarà amato soprattutto dai nostalgici di quel suono.

FORGOTTEN TOMB/WHISKEY RITUAL
‘A Tribute To GG Allin’-7″+CD

Kevin Michael Allin, meglio noto come GG Allin, è stato il cantante di molti gruppi punk (tra i quali ANTiSEEN, The Murder Junkies e The Criminal Quartet) ed è diventato famoso (nel giro) per le sue esibizioni live a dir poco oltraggiose (nudità, defecazione sul palco, automutilazioni, sesso orale con i fan) fino alla sua inevitabile morte prematura (New York, 1993, overdose). Un’attitudine punk così estrema ha molti punti di contatto con il black-metal, e non è un caso che i Forgotten Tomb e i Whiskey Ritual hanno deciso di dedicargli questo split doppia uscita (vinile 7” più cd). Le due band nostrane, in qualche modo old e new school della scena black italiana, si dividono i riflettori (e i lati del disco) riprendendo vecchi cavalli di battaglia del frontman statunitense, riproducendone la predisposizione nichilista, marcia e animalesca. Tre pezzi per gruppo (‘Expose Yourself to Kids’ la mia preferita per i Forgotten Tomb, ‘Die When You Die’ per i Whiskey Ritual), una serie di cazzotti in faccia ben assestati e niente da obiettare. Naturalmente si tratta di un prodotto non adatto a tutti, ma può riservare grandi sorprese, soprattutto agli amanti del punk primordiale.

UNDER THE OCEAN
‘Gates’-CD

‘Gates’, disco di debutto degli Under The Ocean, è ispirato ai racconti di H.P. Lovecraft, e questo spiega le atmosfere horror che caratterizzano il sound, e l’artwork (splendido) che pare riproporre i miti di Cthulhu e il pantheon dei Grandi Antichi. Il brutal-death della band emiliana presenta un livello di collera superiore alla media: violento, disumano, efferato. Un assalto sonico che dura per ognuno dei trentasei minuti del disco, prendendosi una (relativa) pausa solo in occasione dello strumentale (e affascinante) ‘Notturno’. Per un disco come questo, per una band giovane che non possiede (almeno per il momento) l’afflato dei grandi monumenti della scena (i riferimenti: At The Gates e Cannibal Corpse per il passato, The Black Dahlia Murder e Lamb Of God per il presente, peraltro ininterrottamente omaggiati, nobilitati, presi ad esempio), si correrebbe il rischio di passare per semplici esecutori di luoghi comuni. Il quintetto nostrano, invece, riesce nella complicata incombenza di metterci un pizzico di personalità ben distinta, riuscendo a realizzare un esordio interessante, il quale fa pronosticare delle ottime cose per il futuro.

PORT OF SOULS
‘The Life And The Damage Done’-7″

La bassa fedeltà è una religione, non c’è molto da capire. Un po’ come il culto per Jeffrey Lee Pierce (il monicker della band riprende il pezzo omonimo dei suoi Gun Club). Se il rock’n’roll revival è il vostro credo, se vi piace perdervi nei vinili degli anni cinquanta e sessanta, se detestate la cristallina qualità di registrazione del digitale, se le uniche vibrazioni soniche che riescono a farvi smuovere il culo arrivano dal glorioso passato, allora ‘The Life And The Damage Done’ è quello che fa per voi. Un singolo vinilico 7” che ha l’unico difetto di durare soltanto tre canzoni: ‘Mutant Tonight’, che corrompe le menti con invettive proto-punk, ‘Lick My Pick’, che recupera svolgimenti biecamente psychobilly, e ‘Skinning Little Humans’, che si muove circospetta tra funeree paludi infestate di coccodrilli. Una bella scoperta, il quartetto meneghino, tutt’altro che inesperto (membri di Crummy Stuff e STP, Point Of View, Jilted e Reverends…) che, sebbene recuperi ambiti fin troppo conosciuti e codificati, non lesina di stupire e di coinvolgere sfruttando i soliti quattro riff di chitarra e le solite quattro ritmiche scalmanate. E tutto in appena sei minuti.

Code Orange Kids have a lot going on right now. The band is currently on tour, just announced that they’ll be releasing their next full length album with Deathwish later in 2012 and now Topshelf Records is happy to announce that they will be releasing a Code Orange Kids/Full of Hell split EP on April 17th. Deathwish had this to say about them: Fresh out of high school and with an average age of 18 years old, Pennsylvania’s Code Orange Kids remind us of our own embryonic days in the aggressive music scene. They do things their way, creatively cutting their own path through it all. Unconcerned with the direction of other artists, their brand of gritty hardcore/punk is simply refreshing to hear. Henry Rollins Spoken Word: cambio location per la data di Milano

Annunciamo oggi il cambio location per la data di Milano dello Spoken Word ‘The Long March’, presentato da Henry Rollins in un tour europeo che toccherà l’Italia per due imperdibili eventi il 15 e il 16 febbraio. Per motivi logistici, dovuti a esigenze tecniche, l’evento verrà spostato a una distanza di 5 minuti a piedi dalla precedente location, presso il Teatro Sala Fontana in via Gian Antonio Boltraffio 21, in modo da poter ottimizzare la visione dello spettacolo da parte di tutto il pubblico. Il primo appuntamento con l’icona della filosofia hardcore punk si svolgerà quindi a pochissimi passi dal’Alcatraz, location in cui era inizialmente previsto l’evento. A causa dei limitati posti a sedere rimasti, consigliamo l’acquisto dei biglietti al più presto e comunichiamo che i biglietti acquistati in precedenza, e con la dicitura Alcatraz, rimangono validi. Henry Rollins non ha alcun bisogno di presentazioni. È semplicemente l’incarnazione dell’hardcore e di tutto quello che questo genere ha rappresentato negli ultimi 30 anni. Nero, one of the biggest names in dance music, release their brand new single ‘Must Be The Feeling’ which will be a double A side with ‘Innocence’ on 5th March. ‘Must Be The Feeling / Innocence’ is the fifth release to be taken from their #1 album ‘Welcome Reality’ and follows hit singles ‘Reaching Out’, ‘Me & You’, ‘Guilt And The #1 Smash Promises’.

Ahead of the release of the single, they have called in Ram Records duo Delta Heavy on remix duties, which is now available as a free download. The production duo keep the 80s vibe of the original in tact while flipping it into a heaving 4×4 dance floor cut. ‘Must Be The Feeling’, released on Chase & Status’ label MTA Records, pivots on an 80s sample by a Detroit disco teen diva called Carmen, the result of Nero “scouring the internet for rare boogie tracks”. ‘Innocence’, originally released in April 2010, climbed to number 16 and 11, respectively, on the Dance and Independent charts and has become a massive live favourite. This year has been an incredible year for Nero – they are the only British dance act of 2011 to have a #1 album and ‘Promises’ was the first ever UK dubstep #1 single. ‘Shut Up and Rock’ – which features a guest appearance from MAYLENE AND THE SONS OF DISASTER frontman Dallas Taylor – gives fans their third sneak peek of ‘Feel The Power’, a pulse-raising, headbang-inducing, ’80s-influenced slab of fun, glam-tastic metal, in stores January 24 from Tooth and Nail Records. Holy è un aggettivo autorevole, importante, che descrive qualcosa di intoccabile, qualcosa di sacro e qualcosa che in realtà non è reale e concreto. ‘Holy’, l’e.p. di debutto del quartetto omonimo milanese, è esattamente così: il 12” gratta lo sporco che si è accumulato sul fondo delle nostre esistenze e lo immola sull’altare dell’immediatezza punk (Hardcore? Grind? Crust?) declinandolo attraverso otto frammenti che non la mandano a dire a nessuno (in poco più di dieci minuti totali). L’opener-track (anche primo singolo) a titolo ‘The Wrong Side’ è dichiarazione d’intenti e assalto frontale senza compromessi: una strofa, una variazione e stop. Giusto qualche larsen e qualche fischio d’amplificatore a rendere tutto ancor più crudo. La voce grattugiata impreca su una base volgare, ignorante, ed è eversione autentica. È un lavoro frantumato e a tratti solo abbozzato. Ma è opera di una band degna (ex Verme, Light Up, Skruingers, To The Embers…) di sedere sul trono dei campioni del grind-punk, capace di esaltarne l’attitudine. In attesa di sviluppi, a noi fare in modo che questo metodo destabilizzatore, pur già visto (The Locust?), riesca a minacciare il maggior numero di persone possibili.

Il progetto Boy Friend è un soggetto strano e apparentemente inafferrabile. Rifilargli l’etichetta dream-pop potrebbe essere uno dei modi per risolvere la questione in tempi rapidi, ma sarebbe anche troppo comodo e abbastanza superficiale. Il duo tutto al femminile composto da Christa Palazzolo e Sarah Brown possiede quella sacra essenzialità che è guidata dalla genuina ispirazione e dalla scrittura, e padroneggia la intangibile arte di saper rendere scenari vasti con soluzioni minimali. Non è affatto strano, quindi, che la berlinese Hell, Yes! Records le abbia messe sotto contratto e, dopo il 7” ‘Lovedropper’ dell’anno passato, eccole ora debuttare sulla lunga distanza. È strano semmai riuscire a capire in che modo l’etichetta teutonica sia riuscita a scovare la coppia di musiciste texane (da Austin, per la precisione). Se le atmosfere sognanti, poetiche, celestiali, con riferimenti agli anni ottanta, risolte in arrangiamenti scarni con voce, sintetizzatori e drum-machine sono quello che vi affascina nel mondo della musica, ‘Egyptian Wrinkle’ delle Boy Friend dovrebbe essere quello che fa per voi.

‘Walk Into The Pain’ non spreca affatto tempo e con una doppietta iniziale clamorosa si impone immediatamente come uno dei dischi più violenti e luciferini in ambito death/black. Dopo la usuale ‘Intro’ strumentale atmosferica, attacca prima ‘Kaptivity’ (l’invettiva putrida e primordiale di un orco demoniaco che giunge da epoche ancestrali) e subito dopo ‘Dawn of the Immolated’ (che si muove lungo le stesse coordinate sonore) e l’ascoltatore non può non essere investito in pieno viso da un tale cumulo di nera cattiveria. Per la band parmigiana i riferimenti più prossimi sembrano essere i Venom, i primi Slayer, gli Hellhammer e tutto il thrash che si stava evolvendo in death partendo da stilemi NWOBHM a metà anni 80. Questo è abbastanza chiaro in brani come ‘The City Of Pain’ o in alcuni passaggi di ‘Burning Until The End’, mentre appare altrettanto chiaro che l’impostazione black di molti pezzi è parte integrante dell’ispirazione dei Kaptivity, e non un caso isolato. Gli arpeggi oscuri di ‘Outro (End Of Path)’ chiudono un disco duro, infernale, insopportabile per chi non ha dimestichezza con questi suoni e con il catalogo Lo-Fi Creatures, ormai garanzia di qualità in questi ambiti.

Duo garage-punk capitolino formato da Giacomo Mancini (chitarra) e Matteo Vallicelli (batteria), quest’ultimo conosciuto alle forze dell’ordine anche in quanto pestatamburi degli Smart Cops, che esordisce con un 7 pollici di due sole tracce: ’20.000 $’ (durata 2:05) e ‘Goin’ Away’ (durata 1:40). Meno di quattro minuti totali, quindi, per immergersi nelle atmosfere anni sessanta dei Wildmen: camice a fiori hawaiane, occhiali da sole, beach-boys (da intendersi sia in quanto gloriosa band californiana, sia in quanto spiaggianti del litorale laziale), beat, surf, power-pop e revival dei tempi andati. Nonostante l’esiguità della proposta, si intuiscono tante belle cose, che ci riserviamo di confermare in occasione di un’uscita più consistente. Per adesso, se vi siete incuriositi un po’, potete andare a guardarvi su youtube il video effervescente, svitato e dai colori smarmellati di ’20.000 $’.

CAPITAN LOVE
‘The Wasted Years Of Capitan Love’-CD

Le influenze britanniche di Raniero Spinelli, alias Capitan Love (già metà del duo The Erotics a metà anni Duemila), sono talmente esplicite da essere quasi sfacciate. Il suo pop da cameretta costruito con poco ma non per questo povero di suoni e trovate, si poggia su fondamenta robuste, come il disco-funky della title-track, che potrebbe essere un hit-single se solo fosse pompato adeguatamente da un luccicante video su Mtv e sugli altri canali musicali, oppure il cantautorato lieve e intimista, come ne ‘Lo Stagno Delle Rane’. L’inevitabile ascendente beatlesiano si manifesta palesemente in ‘Kitchen Flower’, deviando solo un attimo verso approdi electro-pop a metà corsa, mentre ‘Ennio’ (unico pezzo in italiano) è scheletrico cantautorato che potrebbe essere accomunato a certe cose di Bugo e/o di Dente. ‘ I Fall Down On The Grass’ sviluppa melodie zuccherose gradevoli, laddove ‘The Sky, Tonight’ chiude con un tono accigliato, sottolineato dagli archi sintetici. ‘The Wasted Years Of Capitan Love’ mostra ottime doti di songwriting e un eclettismo che potrebbe portare il cantautore di Udine a dire cose importanti in futuro, ben oltre questo debutto.

“I think dubstep is a natural progression of hip-hop,” says Sen Dog. “Especially the way that we formulated it with Rusko, there’s definitely some roughness to it.” “We’ve always been the type of group to take chances on doing something radically different than what people expect from us. Tragic Hero Records’ We Are Defiance suffered some major setbacks after a serious van accident last winter. The Ocala, FL-based band has been making do for the past year by loading their gear into their tiny van sans trailer, but they’re now counting on the help and generosity of their fans to help them. “Last winter our band was involved in a terrible van accident while on tour in Kentucky. In result our vocalist Brian Calzini was hospitalized and had to undergo surgery. When we wrecked we completely totaled our van and trailer. We lost some minor equipment but the HUGE loss was our transportation. Through out the next few months we were able to save up and buy a used van. THE SUBWAYS: torna in Italia il trio inglese al Rock Im Ring Festival

Sono passati pochi mesi dalle recenti date da tutto esaurito dei The Subways, e sembra ieri che Billy, Josh e Charlotte saltavano e si scatenavano suonando in un Tunnel Club e un Apartamento Hoffman stracolmi. E’ quindi un’evoluzione naturale, quanto gradita, il loro ritorno in Italia il prossimo luglio, in occasione del Rock Im Ring Festival che si terrà a Collabo, in provincia di Bolzano. I SUBWAYS sono tre ragazzi semplici: batterista e cantante sono fratelli, e la bassista suona con loro fin dagli esordi. Con canzoni e melodie di rara potenza, capaci di entrare nella testa degli ascoltatori rimanendoci a lungo, i Subways padroneggiano abilmente un’efficace fusione tra pop e rock che non ha bisogno di particolari fronzoli. Chi ha già potuto vedere il trio dal vivo sa che sul palco non sono secondi a nessuno: abituati a dare tutto, emanano un’energia alla quale è impossibile sottrarsi.
