We couldn’t exempt ourselves of being part of Milan’s excitement for the 50th anniversary of the Salone del Mobile. We decided to open our Milan showroom to three events that make us particularly proud. The collaboration with il–lacions, Stone Island presents the exhibition “La pell del ferro”, designed by Miquel Subiràs, and in this video you will see the exhausting but spectacular preparation that went into the set up of this event. Miquel himself “directed” the crane while positioning a 2.500 kg weight and 6 metre long iron table. Furthermore, for the whole week, we are exhibiting our suggestive installation by Stone Island: “The Moon, The Ultimate Rock of Stone”. And as usual we are hosting our friends of the Italian magazine Velvet with their installation “Velvetissement”, where the editorial team invites visitors to design “the ideal city” on a big billboard. Hessu’s employment history is strong, consisting of a sales managerial position at Element Skateboards as well as an eight year long sales director position at Fenchurch. When asked what his future vision for MAKIA is, he responded “World domination! It would be really cool if MAKIA could be a globally known and recognised brand in a few years time ”. “Handsome, serious and rough around the edges” – these are the first words that came to Hessu’s mind when asked what MAKIA as a brand means to him. Hessu would like to see Mickey Rourke, the American actor and retired wrestler, in MAKIA’s future catalogue. “Mickey Rourke would suit perfectly well with our next season’s slogan: “Old but still Gold” . “Only problem is we don’t know him that well”- laughs founder, Joni Malmi. Luca collabora con Carhartt già da qualche stagione: sono sue alcune grafiche delle collezioni fall/winter 2010 e spring/summer 2011 e ha anche lavorato a nuovi layout per la linea Carhartt Heritage fall/winter 2011. Tutti i suoi artwork sono interamente realizzati a mano e includono calligrafia e disegno di lettering manuale.

Both long time friends have a trail of collaborative projects, among which the creation of Girl Skateboards and the string of brands attached to the Girl House. As part of the Lakai family from day 1, Jonze as had his hands on multiple Lakai projects, among which the Where The Wild Things Are line of footwear back in 2009. This spring’s colorway of Lakai‘s new classic, the Pico, is his first ever project under his own name. The white suede / white canvas combo reflects Jonze‘s natural personal taste, whereas the embroidery on each heel tag leaves no equivocal to the style’s ownership. The art of Andy Jenkins has been omnipresent in the skateboard world for over 2 decades. Signing some of skateboarding’s most iconic graphics, from the original “Wrench Pilot” in the early pages of Transworld Skateboarding, to the leader of the Art Dump, Jenkins has had a constant output of work respected and admired by the entire skate community. Mi trovavo a Londra per un lavoro l’11 marzo, quando mi arriva un messaggio da un’amica, con cui avevo condiviso un bellissimo viaggio in Giappone nell’estate 2010 : “terremoto a Tokyo con tsunami”. Mi sono collegato ed ho visto le immagini e i filmati di case, auto e detriti che venivano spazzate via in pochi attimi. Mi sono ritrovato lì per alcuni istanti ed un peso enorme si è impadronito di me. Pensavo all’apocalisse, provavo quella sensazione di impotenza insopportabile davanti a quella forza inarrestabile che portava via i sogni e le vite di migliaia di persone. Ma anche i nostri piccoli egocentrismi, le ipocrisie, l’indifferenza nei confronti del pianeta che ci ospita. Pensavo a quanto piccolo ed inutile fosse il mio scopo in quel momento rispetto alla tragedia che stavano vivendo dall’altra parte del mondo. E la sensazione era ancora più forte perché negli ultimi anni ci siamo più volte trovati davanti ad immagini simili. Ho cercato subito le persone che conoscevo in Giappone, “stiamo bene, ma abbiamo tremato un bel po’..” rispondevano. Altri hanno tremato di più, purtroppo. In più di 10000 persone. Alcuni li invitavano ad andarsene da lì, subito, ma non è così facile mollare tutto nei fatti. La speranza che le cose si sistemino è sempre un grande.

Quando pensi a cosa puoi fare per aiutare gli altri, succede che o agisci e basta, oppure trovi una serie di scuse che annegano la tua voglia di fare nella solita routine. Stavolta abbiamo deciso di fare qualcosa di concreto, per quanto in nostro possesso. Faremo quello che sappiamo fare. Con Gold abbiamo stampato delle tshirt ed organizzato una serata per raccogliere fondi da destinare all’emergenza in Giappone, con la collaborazione della Croce Rossa Italiana. Pubblicheremo infine sul sito di Gold il resoconto di quanto ricavato dall’operazione e la certificazione della donazione fatta. Marco Klefisch e Dj Painè, con cui condivido il mio studio a Milano, si presteranno selezionando ottima musica per farvi star bene. Vi chiedo di collaborare con la vostra presenza alla serata presso il Logic di Firenze, in cui sarà possibile effettuare una donazione di 1 euro (o più) all’ingresso, ed acquistare le tshirt sul posto. One Distribution announces the opening of a unique branded retail space curated in the basement of famed London-based skate shop, Slam City Skates. Branded ONE at Slam City Skates, the space not only represents the first global retail initiative from One Distribution, but a historically significant foray into what was once the home of legendary UK vinyl shop, Rough Trade. In 1988 the unoccupied basement of Slam City Skates became the home of Rough Trade. Having hosted in-store gigs from artists such as Pavement, Stereolab, Jeff Buckley, Sebadoh, PJ Harvey and the first ever Beastie Boys show in the UK , the Neal’s Yard location is legendary and has always had a core customer base including Kurt Cobain. In homage of the basement’s musical heritage and Slam City Skates’ quarter-century commitment to the London skate scene, ONE at Slam City Skates was designed and curated to reflect the space’s rich history and cultural relevance.
