CHOIR BOY RETURN…
RELEASE NEW SINGLE / VIDEO ‘I’LL ALWAYS LET YOU DOWN’ VIA DAIS RECORDS. ON TOUR W/ AFI NOW, IN THE STUDIO THIS SPRING…
The ethereal indie darlings drop nostalgia-laced anti-love dream bop w/ bizarre claymation video. Ethereal indie darlings Choir Boy triumphantly return with their new single produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira, Japanese Breakfast). It’s their first taste of new music since 2020 and hits just in time for their support tour with AFI which is underway now. Song finds band at the height of their powers, taking their nostalgia-laced, romantic dream pop to new depths, sounding sensual and sinister, equal parts delight and sorrow. Drum machines shuffle over dirty synth bass, while bright bells blossom under the light of Adam Klopp‘s angelic vocals. When pressed to describe what the song’s meaning, Klopp, with a grin, states, “(I’ll Always) is an anti-love song—a sardonic self-indictment of a failing lover.” The charmingly bizarre video directed and animated by Choir Boy themselves. Over the past four years, group have continued making surrealist music videos, sharing avant-garde updates on social media, and playing live across North America and Europe. Yet, when measured against the release of their last album, the lack of new music has felt like an eternity for some in their dedicated fanbase.
Jorge Elbrecht, a renowned songwriter and stalwart of Los Angeles’s underground music community, was asked to produce the new single, becoming the final piece of the puzzle. Together they immediately clicked into a harmonious workflow and, “a shared sense of humor about the bleakness… in (the song’s) previous incarnation, before we were working with Jorge, there was something missing.” While producing ‘I’ll Always’, Elbrecht contributed new sounds and arrangements, and encouraged the band to explore, diving deeper into the depths. And the result? A new day, carrying on, right where we belong. Serendipitously, the themes of their new songs, and the greater arc of Choir Boy, are coming together. Choir Boy support AFI on their “Holy Visions” tour this month, before returning to the studio this Spring. They’ve also confirmed a performance at Darker Waves later this year.
