‘Stardust’ marks another groundbreaking chapter for Danny Brown, an artist who has continually redefined indie rap on his own terms. His first album written in sobriety, release finds him revealing a new level of vulnerability and creative clarity, stepping into territory few rappers would dare to approach. Danny, who has a long history of spotting talent early (working with the likes of Purity Ring, Charli XCX, Evian Christ, Ashnikko before they blew up), tapped an expansive roster of musical outsiders across this album, including underscores, Jane Remover, Frost Children, Quadeca, Femtanyl, JOHNNASCU, 8485, IssBrokie, Nnamdi, Ta Ukraika, Zheani. Pulling from experimental pop and underground electronics, the final product is messy, emotional, and held together with a strange kind of clarity. Rapper is the center of gravity within the musical world he’s curating and the link between all the artists and features, who have been mutually inspired by one another’s work. Known for his chameleonic style and avant-garde vision, he has endured where many of his peers faded, consistently pushing rap’s boundaries. While his past work leaned into darker tones, this record introduces a newfound lightness—still sharp, inventive, and unafraid to challenge conventional production and storytelling.
