Members of Lawrence Arms + The Ghost form Strategies
Some familiar faces from the early aughts Chicago punk scene have started a new band called Strategies and today is your first chance to hear them.
Made up of Brian Moss (The Ghost, Hanalei, Great Apes), Neil Hennessy (The Lawrence Arms, Joyce Manor), and Paul Lask (The Ghost), Strategies got its start when Paul and Neil began sending demos to each other during the pandemic. After fleshing out the music, Brian Moss was brought into the fold to handle vocal duties. Their self-titled debut EP is built on odd time signatures and arpeggiated riffs that scream Chicago while also blending in elements of indie-rock in the vein of Jets To Brazil or even early Death Cab For Cutie.
Formed remotely in 2020, Strategies is a long-distance collaboration between old friends from the early 2000s Chicago punk and indie rock scenes. Guitarist Paul Lask (The Ghost, Tight Phantomz) sent demos to Neil Hennessy (Lawrence Arms, Joyce Manor) and Brian Moss (Great Apes, Hanalei, The Ghost). This e.p. is the result. Arpeggiated riffs, cascading guitar delays, and odd time signatures are bound by a straightforward drumming sensibility. Longing is a thematic mood of the Strategies project, whether for the natural world (‘Fire Drill’) or for a past life (‘Outages’).
