Detroit punk rock trio Middle-Out releases first new music in over two years with ‘Pipe Wrench’ on Punkerton Records
The wait has been almost two and a half years since they released new music. Following up on their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, the band is back with a brand new single.
Mixed and mastered by Chris Fogal (The Gamits), ‘Pipe Wrench’ captures the essence of who Middle-Out is, while also charting new territory as a band. Lyrically, it’s a song that is relatable to all of us. We all have hopes and dreams for our lives. For whatever reason, we put barriers and doubts in the way of accomplishing those dreams, making them more and more like a pipe dream with each excuse. Hearing more music from Middle-Out won’t be a pipe dream. They’re currently working on the follow-up to their 2024 album and will be in the studio sooner than you think to record it.
“-Get over yourself- A phrase repeated and added to the list of things you’ll never get done. When deadlines and responsibilities pile in front of you, it’s easier to dig yourself into a hole than it is to scratch and claw your way forward – especially when you are the biggest thing standing in your way. Track sings of the endless dream of getting through the mess. How the dream becomes more and more faint until it’s given up on entirely. It becomes buried inside of you while you’re buried under the things left undone. Every new demand forces you against your will to add another pipe to that pipe dream. Every obligation is another monster creeping under your bed that wakes you in a panic just as you begin to fall asleep. Each task wears you down until might is just a maybe. Until will turns to won’t. Pulling yourself out of a hole is physically impossible. Mentally it’s even harder.” – DJ Liden (vocals/bass)
Middle-Out are a Detroit punk rock trio built on melodic urgency, dual vocals, sharp hooks, and the kind of restless Midwestern energy that makes every song feel like it is one bad day away from boiling over. Formed in 2021 by Matthew Fisher, DJ Liden, and Daniel Stover, the band came together with a shared instinct for fast, melodic punk rock that could still carry some weight behind it. They introduced themselves in 2022 with the ‘Bender’ EP, a six-song release that established the foundation of their sound: tight, urgent, hook-driven punk with plenty of speed, but just as much emphasis on melody, personality, and lyrics pulled from anxiety, burnout, nostalgia, frustration, and the general mess of trying to keep moving when life keeps piling on. band took that foundation further while making their self-titled debut full-length, recorded and mixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording in Chicago and mastered by Paul Miner at Buzzbomb Studios. After completing the record, the band signed with Punkerton Records in December 2023, with ‘Middle-Out’ arriving in May 2024. Across 12 songs, the album sounds like a band fully settling into its identity. Breakneck punk momentum, jagged guitars, dual-vocal interplay, and big choruses collide with songs about getting older, grinding through work, damaged relationships, self-sabotage, mental spirals, and the strange realization that time seems to move faster the more of it you have behind you. There is plenty of humor and melody in the mix, but Middle-Out never sand down the rough edges that make the songs feel human. Their sound lands somewhere between melodic punk, pop punk, orgcore, and straight-up Midwest punk rock, but the appeal is simpler than any genre tag. Trio write songs that hit quickly, stick around, and feel lived-in. Fast enough to keep moving, catchy enough to stay in your head, and honest enough to mean something after the chorus is over, Middle-Out are not trying to reinvent punk rock. They are making the version of it they want to hear: loud, urgent, melodic, imperfect, and very much alive.
